Identity and Capitalism in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou utváření identit v pozdním kapitalismu z pohledu postmodernismu. Teoretická část zahrnuje současné teorie identit a jejich utváření, které vychází z předpokladu, že existují zastřešující diskurzy, které překáží v individuální identifikaci. Proto tato bakalářská práce zkoumá, jak jsou tyto koncepty vystiženy v populárních médiích, konkrétně v anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Analytická část pak propojuje to, jak média odrážejí současnou kulturu, jakožto i obavy spojené s kapitalistickou ideologií. Práce se zaměřuje se na zobrazení sociálních identit a jejich příslušných třídních, genderových a etnických kategorií.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the formation of identities in late capitalism from the postmodernist perspective. The theoretical part includes current research on identities and their formation, which proposes that there are overarching narratives that impede individual identification. Therefore, this thesis examines the representation of these concepts in popular media, specifically in the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The analytical part then connects how media reflects contemporary cultures, but also its anxieties of the capitalist ideology. It focuses on the depictions of social identities and their respective categories of class, gender, and ethnicity.
