Translation Strategies in Subtitling Humor: The Office

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the translation of humor in the subtitles of the sitcom The Office. The theoretical part will introduce key principles of subtitling, its classification and restrictions. It will also define humor, its theories and the types of jokes that can occur (wordplay, cultural references). The theoretical part will close with a discussion on translation strategies. The analytical part will present the corpus and its characteristics. The analysis will be based on the identification of individual jokes, their context and classification and assessing translation strategies used. The aim of the thesis is to determine which translation strategies were the most fruitful and whether they helped the translator to produce an adequate counterpart of a joke in the target text.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem humoru v titulcích sitcomu The Office. Teoretická část seznámí čtenáře se základními principy titulkování, jejich klasifikací a restrikcemi. Dále definuje humor, jeho teorie a typy vtipů, se kterými se překladatel může setkat (slovní hříčky, kulturní reference). Teoretická část bude zakončena diskuzí o překladatelských metodách. Analytická část pak představí korpus a jeho charakteristiku. Analýza bude vycházet z identifikace jednotlivých vtipů, jejich kontextu a klasifikace a také vyhodnocení použitých překladatelských metod. Cílem práce je stanovit, které metody byly nejvíce úspěšné a zdali pomohly překladateli vytvořit adekvátní protějšek vtipu z originálního textu.
