German-American Immigrants in World War I

Abstract:

This study examines the historical experiences of German Americans during World War I, focusing on discrimination, hastened assimilation, cultural eradication, and challenges to constitutional rights faced by this community. The study provides a backdrop of German migration to America and their contributions to American society, highlighting their reason for migration, their expectations from migration into the United States, as well as cultural and economic impact. The main body delves into the wartime experiences of German Americans, detailing public hysteria, mob formations, and notable cases of prosecuted or even physically assaulted individuals. It analyzes the de-Germanization efforts, including the distancing from German-derived names and includes an examination of attitude towards the German minority in states such as Iowa, Louisiana, Texas, and Nebraska. Furthermore, the thesis discusses American wartime legislation and its effects on German Americans, analyzing the Army Appropriations Act of 1916, Espionage Act of 1917 and their impact on the German American community. Through historical analysis, this thesis sheds light on the violation of constitutional rights and the dangerous precedent set by the discriminatory treatment of German Americans during World War I. By contextualizing these experiences within the broader framework of immigration, cultural integration, and civil liberties, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities of identity and loyalty in times of national crisis.

Abstract:

Tato studie zkoumá historické zkušenosti amerických Němců během první světové války a zaměřuje se na diskriminaci, urychlenou asimilaci, kulturní likvidaci a problémy s ústavními právy, kterým tato komunita čelila. Práce poskytuje pozadí pro migraci Němců do Ameriky a jejich přínosu pro americkou společnost, přičemž zdůrazňuje důvody jejich migrace, jejich očekávání od migrace do Spojených států, ale také kulturní a ekonomický dopad. Hlavní část se zabývá zkušenostmi amerických Němců během války, podrobně popisuje veřejnou hysterii, formaci agresivních davů a význačné případy stíhaných nebo dokonce fyzicky napadených osob. Analyzuje degermanizační snahy, včetně distancování se od jmen německého původu, a zahrnuje zkoumání postoje k německé menšině ve státech jako Iowa, Louisiana, Texas a Nebraska. Dále se práce zabývá americkou válečnou legislativou a jejími dopady na německé Američany, analyzuje zákon o armádních prostředcích z roku 1916, zákon o špionáži z roku 1917 a jejich dopad na německou komunitu. Prostřednictvím historické analýzy tato práce objasňuje porušování ústavních práv a nebezpečný precedent, který vytvořilo diskriminační zacházení s německými Američany během první světové války. Zasazením těchto zkušeností do širšího hlediska imigrace, kulturní integrace a občanských svobod přispívá tato práce k hlubšímu pochopení složitosti identity a loajality v době národní krize.
