Eating Disorders: Relation to Imagination and Field Dependence

Abstract:

Výzkumným cílem předkládané diplomové práce bylo zjistit, zda existují rozdíly v úrovni kreativní imaginace mezi osobami s poruchami příjmu potravy a porovnávací (neklinickou) skupinou. Dalším cílem bylo využít škály CIS jako měřítka sugestibility/hypnability, které byly dány do kontextu s kognitivním stylem závislost – nezávislost na poli. Byly ověřovány hypotézy týkající se rozdílů v míře závislosti na poli mezi osobami s poruchami příjmu a porovnávací skupinou. Teoretická část práce poskytuje přehledový rámec a východiska výzkumu. V empirické části je podrobně popsán postup výzkumu a použité metody. Samotného výzkumu se zúčastnilo 46 dívek a žen s jednou z diagnóz ze spektra poruch příjmu potravy ve věku 14 – 48 let a 46 dívek a žen z neklinické populace ve věku 16 – 33 let. Ke zjištění úrovně kreativní imaginace (případně hypnability/sugestibility byla použita Škála kreativní imaginace (Wilsonová, Barber, 1978). Závislost – nezávislost na poli byla určována pomocí testu Group Embedded Figures Test (Oltman, Raskin, Witkin, 1971). Jako externí kritérium odlišení pacientek s poruchami příjmu potravy od porovnávací skupiny byl administrován Test jídelních postojů (Garner, Garfinkel, 1979) a pro zmapování problematiky body image byl využit Stunkardův test siluet. Výsledky ukazují, že neexistují prokazatelné rozdíly v úrovni kreativní imaginace mezi osobami s poruchami příjmu potravy a porovnávací (neklinickou) skupinou. Bylo zjištěno, že osoby s poruchami příjmu potravy jsou signifikantně více závislé na poli než porovnávací skupina a byla také nalezena větší závislost na poli u osob s neadekvátním body image.

Abstract:

The research target of the thesis was to find out whether there are some differences in the level of creative imagination among patients with eating disorders and comparison (non-clinical) group. Another aim was to use the CIS as a range of scales suggestibility/hypnotic susceptibility and put them in the context of cognitive style field dependence – independence. There are some hypotheses tested, which concern differences in the field dependence between patients with eating disorders and the comparison group. The theoretical part of the work provides theoretical frame and bases for our research. In the empirical part of the thesis there are procedure and research methods described. Research was attended by 46 girls and women with diagnosis of the eating disorders at the age of 14 - 48 and 46 girls and women from non-clinical population at the age of 16 - 33. We used Creative imagination scale (Wilson, Barber, 1978) to examine the level of creative imagination (hypnability/suggestibility). Field dependence – independence was identified by Group Embedded Figures Test (Oltman, Raskin, Witkin, 1971). Eating Attitude Test (Garner, Garfinkel, 1979) was presented for distinction between patients with eating disorders and the comparison group and the body image issues has been recovered by Stunkard silhouette test. The results reflect that there are no demonstrable differences in the level of creative imagination between group with eating disorders and comparison (non-clinical) group. It was found that people with eating disorders are significantly more field dependent than the comparison group and it was also found that there is a greater dependence on the people with inadequate body image.
