Experience of religious conversion: narrative perspective

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem náboženské konverze. V teoretické části představuji jednotlivé teoretické přístupy ke studiu náboženské konverze a také výsledky výzkumů, které se tímto jevem zabývají. V závěru teoretické části se zaměřuji na kritiku dosavadních způsobů zkoumání konverze z pozice narativní výzkumné perspektivy a představuji ty přístupy, které se zaměřují na příběh náboženské konverze. Narativní výzkumné hledisko bylo zvoleno jako odpovídající výzkumná perspektiva i pro můj výzkum. Cílem výzkumu je potom přispět k porozumění zkušenosti náboženské konverze z pohledu lidí, kteří náboženskou konverzí sami prošli. Hlavní výzkumná otázka zní: Jakým způsobem je zkušenost náboženské konverze rekonstruována ve vyprávění? Prostřednictvím narativních interview facilitovaných použitím techniky Čáry života bylo získáno šest autobiografických vyprávění – „příběhů víry“. K analýze příběhů byly poté použity dvě interpretační perspektivy: nejprve byla provedena holisticko-obsahová analýza (Lieblich et al., 1998), dále byly vytvořeny kategorie, na základě kterých byl popsán způsob ztvárnění zkušenosti náboženské konverze „napříč“ vyprávěními. Prezentace výsledků se tedy skládá ze dvou částí. V první části jsou představeny prostřednictvím narativních rekonstrukcí jedinečné způsoby, jimiž je zkušenost náboženské konverze ztvárněna v kontextu životních příběhů jednotlivých participantů výzkumu. Název každé z rekonstrukcí představuje ve zhuštěné podobě tématický vzorec opakující se a obměňující se v rámci vyprávění, který každé vyprávění charakterizuje jako jedinečný celek. K těmto rekonstrukcím jsem získala od respondentů zpětné vazby, jejichž cílem byla validizace mých interpretací a posílení dialogické a participativní povahy výzkumu. Dále jsou prezentovány a popsány jednotlivé kategorie, ke kterým jsem dospěla v průběhu druhé části analýzy rozhovorů. Jde o následující kategorie: Vlivy vedoucí ke konverzi, Aktérství a jeho proměna, Charakter změny, Líčení konverze, Struktura životního příběhu a Dis/kontinuita mezi současným životem a životem před konverzí. Ukázalo se, že za pomoci těchto kategorií lze popsat variabilitu, jimiž je náboženská konverze v příbězích ztvárněna „napříč“ vyprávěními. V diskuzi obsah jednotlivých kategorií zasazuji do kontextu poznatků o náboženské konverzi, které jsem prezentovala v teoretické části práce. Reflektuji rovněž silné stránky i omezení tohoto výzkumu, a nastiňuji směry, jimiž by se mohly ubírat další podobné výzkumy.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the phenomenon of religious conversion. In the theoretical part of this thesis I present several theoretical perspectives of religious conversion and results of those studies that focus on this phenomenon. I then move to the critique of the existing ways of research of religious conversion from the point of view of the narrative research perspective and I bring to attention those approaches that focus on conversion narratives. The narrative methodological approach was also chosen as a relevant perspective for my study. The aim of this work is to contribute to the understanding of the experience of religious conversion from the viewpoint of those individuals who have undergone this experience. I´m seeking to answer the question: In what way(s) is the experience of religious conversion re-constructed in the conversion narrative? By using narrative interviews facilitated by the „life-line“ method I collected six autobiographical narratives – „stories of faith“. The analysis was performed from two different interpretive perspectives: 1) holistic-content analysis (Lieblich et al., 1998) and 2) categorical analysis through categories that were defined on the basis of interpretative dialogue with the texts. The results are thus presented in two parts: First I present six narrative reconstructions of individual stories, in which I tried to capture the unique ways in which the experience of religious conversion is shaped in the context of the whole life story. The title of each of the reconstructions expresses the recurrent thematic pattern, which defines each narrative as a unique whole. Feedback on the reconstructions, received from participants of this study, serves as a means of validation and strengthens the parciticipative and dialogical character of the study. In the second part of my analysis six categories were defined. I present and describe the categories in the second part of the presentation of my results. The categories are as follows: Influences leading to conversion, Agency and its change, Character of change, Description of conversion, Life story structure, Dis/continuity of the present life and the life before conversion. It seems that these categories constitute a good tool to describe the variability of ways, in which conversion is shaped across individual stories. Finally I discuss the content of each of the categories in light of existing findings on religious conversion. I also reflect on the limits and strong points of this study and I foreshadow possible directions in which following narrative research on religious conversion could take.
