Using Storybooks in Primary EFL Classroom

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce navrhuje používání anglických dětských knih v hodinách angličtiny na prvním stupni základní školy k vytváření prostředí vhodného k osvojení tohoto jazyka. Cílem práce je najít možné postupy využití vyprávění příběhů a čtení anglických knih při výuce jazyka a vyhodnotit jejich efektivitu na základě akčního výzkumu. V teoretické části práce jsou definovány klíčové pojmy a shrnuty názory odborníků včetně praktických nápadů pro používání příběhů. Praktická část obsahuje projekt zaměřený na použití anglických knih ve výuce a sleduje přínos používání knih pro zvyšování motivace žáků, zlepšení jazykových dovedností a rozvoje raného čtenářství v anglickém jazyce.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis suggests using English storybooks as a possible way of creating an acquisition-rich environment in the primary EFL classroom. The aim of this thesis is to find possible methods of implementing storytelling and reading storybooks into regular English lessons, and evaluate the effectiveness of these methods on the basis of an action research. In the theoretical part, key terms are defined and the experts´ opinions are summarized including practical ideas for using stories as they are suggested in literature. These ideas can be used by other teachers who are interested in this topic. The practical part contains the project of using English storybooks in regular English classes to improve the language skills, promote reading literacy and encourage independent reading of children who have been learning English since their preschool age and are now in the third class of primary school.
