Microfibers in the upper reaches of the Svratka River

Abstract:

Mikrovlákna, ať už syntetická nebo přírodní, jsou již ve všech přírodních prostředí světa, a to včetně řek. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl kvantifikovat mikrovlákna v povrchové vodě na horním toku řeky Svratky, od jejího pramene po vodní nádrž Vír I, která slouží jako zdroj pitné vody, a také najít faktory, které ovlivňují množství mikrovláken v jednotlivých částech řeky. Vzorky vody (n=13, ~3 litry na každy) byly odebrány do skleněných lahví a mikrovlákna byla kvantifikována pomocí optického mikroskopu. Alochtonní faktory jako například land cover, populace, odpadní vody nebo doprava byly analyzovány pomocí analýzy hlavních komponent, za účelem nalezení vzorců v množství mikrovláken. I přes vysoké množství mikrovláken (průměr=26 mikrovláken/L), žádné faktory, které by množství mikrovláken vysvětlovaly, a tak ani jejich potenciální zdroje nalezeny nebyly. Analýza hlavních komponent nenašla žádný vzorec ve vysvětlujících promenných na žádné ze sledovaných prostorových škál. Důvodem může být relativně malá studovaná délka (~50 km) ve srovnání s většími řekami, kde byly zjištěny faktory jako jsou hustota osídlení nebo i zemědělství. Kromě toho mohou být na takto krátkém úseku více důležité autochtonní faktory. Přesto však byly nejvíce znečištěné vzorky odebrány v blízkosti míst souvisejících s turismem, který zde může být zdrojem mikrovláken.

Abstract:

Microfibres, either synthetic or natural, have been found everywhere in the environment, including rivers. This study aims to quantify the microfibres in surface water in the upper reaches of the Svratka River, from its spring to the Vír I reservoir, which serves as a source of drinking water, and to also determine the driving factors of their abundance in the river. Surface water samples (n=13; ~3 litres each) were collected into glass bottles and the microfibres were quantified using an optical microscope. Allochthonous factors, e.g. land cover, population, wastewater, or traffic, were analysed with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to detect the patterns in the abundance of microfibres. However, despite the high amounts of microfibres (mean=26 microfibres/L), no driving factors were found, and thus, no potential sources could be traced. PCA showed no patterns in the variables over several spatial scales regarding the abundance of microfibres. This could be caused by a rather small studied length (~50 km) in comparison to larger rivers worldwide that found drivers like population density or even agriculture. On top of that, autochthonous factors may play a more important role than the allochthonous ones on a small scale. Nevertheless, the most polluted samples were collected close to tourist activities, which could be the source of microfibres here.
