Analysis of determinants of alcohol consumption in OECD countries

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje vybrané determinanty spotřeby alkoholu. Metodou nejmenších čtverců jsou sestaveny dva modely, ve kterých jsou zvoleny determinanty: roční průměrná mzda obyvatele, míra nezaměstnanosti, úroveň vzdělání, podíl každodenních kuřáků a náboženství. Dále první model zahrnuje proměnnou zdanění alkoholických nápojů a model druhý cenu piva. Analýza využívá průřezová data zemí OECD z roku 2015. V obou modelech je potvrzena hypotéza o pozitivním vlivu průměrných mezd na spotřebu alkoholu a také je zde potvrzen významný vliv proměnné náboženství, který prokazuje, že islámské náboženství má negativní vliv na spotřebu alkoholu. První model dále potvrzuje hypotézu o pozitivní korelaci mezi konzumací alkoholu a každodenním kouřením a hypotézu o negativním vlivu vzdělání na spotřebu alkoholu. Model druhý potvrzuje hypotézu o cenově neelastické poptávce po alkoholu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyzes selected determinants of alcohol consumption. Two models are created by using ordinary least squares. As determinants models use: annual average wage, unemployment rate, level of education, proportion of daily smokers and religion. The first model also includes variable taxation of alcoholic beverages and the second model includes beer price. The analysis uses OECD countries cross section data countries from 2015. In both models, the hypothesis about positive influence of average wages on alcohol consumption is confirmed, and the variable religion has significant influence on alcohol consumption, which shows that Islamic religion has a negative impact on alcohol consumption. The first model confirms hypothesis of positive correlation between alcohol consumption and daily smoking and also confirms the hypothesis about negative impact of education on alcohol consumption. The second model confirms the hypothesis of a non-elastic demand for alcohol.
