Mire vegetation and pH: the effect of sampling protocol

Abstract:

Vegetaci rašelinišť ovlivňují zejména vodní režim, pH a nasycení vody bázemi. S proměnnou prostředí pH se setkáváme ve většině prací, zabývajících se vztahy mezi vegetací a fyzikálně-chemickými vlastnostmi prostředí. Existuje však více způsobů jak pH změřit. V předkládané práci se věnuji právě dopadu různých metod měření na výslednou interpretaci ekologických studií. Během vegetačního období 2007-2009 jsem zaznamenala 55 fytocenologických snímků slatiništní vegetace ve středních a severních Čechách. Na každé ploše jsem měřila pH čtyřmi možnými metodami: (1) pH vody, která naplnila vyhloubený důlek v rašelině, (2) pH vody, kterou jsem vymačkala ze stélek mechorostů, (3) pH výluhu půdního vzorku a (4) pH povrchové vody v rašelinných jezírkách či šlencích. Poslední způsob se týká pouze nejmokřejších slatinišť (35 ploch). Analýzou TWINSPAN jsem soubor rozdělila do 6 vegetačních skupin, které zahrnují celý gradient od chudých horských vrchovišť, přes přechodová rašeliniště až k bohatým a vápnitým slatinám. Mnohorozměrnými a statistickými analýzami jsem hodnotila strukturu floristického složení a množství vysvětlené variability dané zvolenou metodou měření. Variabilitu v druhovém složení nejlépe postihla metoda měření pH vody ve vyhloubeném důlku. Nejméně variability vysvětlilo pH vody vymačkané z mechů, které spíše než vlastnosti prostředí vystihuje schopnost rašeliníků okyselovat okolní vodu.

Abstract:

The mire vegetation is controlled predominantly by water regime, water pH and water base saturation. The effects of water pH are frequently mentioned in scientific publications dealing with relationship between the vegetation and the physical and chemical properties of the environment. However, there are more methods how to measure water pH. In this thesis, I focused on the impact of different pH sampling protocols on the interpretation of ecological studies. During the vegetative periods of 2007 – 2009, I recorded 55 vegetation plots of fen vegetation in Central and Northern Bohemia (Czech Republic). On each sampling plot, I measured water pH using four different methods. Firstly, I dug a small hole in the mire and measured the pH of the water that subsequently filled it. Secondly, I measured the pH of the water obtained by squeezing bryophytes. Thirdly, I extracted soil samples for further analysis. Finally, I measured the pH of the surface water in natural pools or hollows, if there were any (35 plots). The obtained data were divided into six groups using the TWINSPAN analysis. These groups reflect the gradient stretching from ombrotrophic-bog and poor-fen vegetation to extremely-rich and calcareous-fen vegetation. Multidimensional numerical and statistical analyses were applied to evaluate the pattern of floristic composition and the sum of variability explained by each of pH variables. The changes in species composition were best reflected by pH measured in water of shallow holes. The less amount of variation was explained by pH of water squeezed from bryophytes, that illustrates the Sphagnum ability to acidify the water rather than characterises the environment.
