Mothers World: Critical discourse analysis of Maminka magazine

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Mateřský svět. Kritická diskursivní analýza časopisu Mamin-ka“ se zabývá kritickým pohledem na mateřský svět tak, jak je konstruovaný v časopisu Maminka. Cílem práce je zjistit, jaké diskursy se v časopisu objevují, jak tyto diskursy konstruují mateřský svět jako celek a jak napomáhají k neproblematickému vidění toho-to světa, tedy k udržování mocenských vztahů. Práce se nejprve věnuje teoretickému zakotvení tématu v oblasti sociální/diskursivní konstrukce mateřství a diskursivní teorie. Následně se zabývá metodologickým vymezením kritické diskursivní analýzy. Kon-krétně využívá přístupu, který pro analyzování textů navrhl N. Fairclough. Nakonec dochází k samotné analýze tištěného média. Autorka identifikuje osm kategorií žen-ských rolí, skrze které je mateřský svět vytvářen, dále jim odpovídající diskursy a soci-ální determinanty a ideologie, které stojí na jejich pozadí. Dochází k závěru, že jednotli-vé diskursy napomáhají k udržování mocenských vztahů skrze vytváření norem a stan-dardů správného mateřského světa, které se zakládají na odkazování k přirozenosti a normálnosti ženou zastávaných rolí. Pokud žena chce splnit požadavky správného ma-teřského světa, musí tyto role přijmout.

Abstract:

The thesis “Mothers’ world. Critical discourse analysis of Maminka magazine” deals with the critical perspective on the mothers’ world as constructed in Maminka magazine. The aim of this work is to ascertain what kind of discourses occurs in the magazine, how these discourses create the mothers’ world as a whole and how they help to sustain the power relations. First, the thesis is engaged in the theoretical framing of the social/discursive construction of motherhood and discursive theory. Then it covers with the methodological determination of the critical discourse analysis; specifically it is interested in the procedure propounded by N. Fairclough. Finally, it gets to the media analysis. The author sets eight categories of female roles through which the mothers’ world is made, and then she identifies discourses which correspond to these categories and social determinants and ideologies which stand in the background. Finally she makes the conclusion that discourses help to preserve the power relation through the production of the norms and standards of good/proper mothers’ world which are based on the making references to the naturalness and normality of women roles. If the woman wants to fulfil the proper mothers world requirements she has to accept these roles.
