Career options for art college graduates in the creative industries – a case study of graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zodpovídá otázku možností uplatnění absolventů vysokých uměleckých škol v kulturních a kreativních průmyslech formou případové studie nedávných absolventů Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze. Absolventi se uplatňují jako profesionální výtvarní umělci dle svého vystudovaného oboru, v příbuzných oborech kreativních průmyslů či jako kombinace obojího. Empirický kvalitativní výzkum potvrzuje a rozšiřuje teoretický a analytický základ práce poukazující na přetrvávající problém prekarizace na trzích práce v kreativních průmyslech. Stěžejním problémem identifikovaným v rámci výzkumu je dále nedostatečná kvalita teoretických kurzů včetně základů art managementu v rámci nabízených studijních programů a absence mediátora, který by přiblížil uměleckou tvorbu k prodeji veřejnosti.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis introduces the possibilities of employment of art colleges graduates in cultural and creative industries in the form of a case study of recent graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Graduates work as professional visual artists in accordance with their field of study, in related fields of the creative industries or as a combination of both. Empirical qualitative research confirms and expands the theoretical and analytical basis of the work, pointing to the persistent problem of precarity in the labor markets in the creative industries. Another key problem identified in the research is the insufficient quality of theoretical courses, including the basics of art management in the art college curriculum for visual artists and the absence of a mediator who would introduce artistic outputs for sale to the public.
