Subversiveness of Nonsense in Selected Children's Fantasy Novels

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine subversive tendencies in the works of children?s nonsense fantasy literature, namely Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and The BFG by Roald Dahl. The methodological framework consists of critical discourse analysis through the prism of Teun van Dijk?s socio-cognitive approach. With respect to the socio-cultural milieu of each author, subversion is analyzed in three dyadic sections: education and parenting, gender and identity, authority and conventions. The thesis shows that the very nature of nonsense in the selected works undermines not only the sociopolitical systems of our society ? our perception of power and its distribution within society ? but also the basic principles of communication. As a result, the foundations of our reality are brought into question; nonsense exposes them as an arbitrary conglomerate of conventions, which largely define our perception of the world and ourselves.

Cílem této diplomové práce je analýza subverzivních tendencí ve vybraných dílech dětské nonsensové fantasy literatury: Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland Lewise Carrolla, The Phantom Tollbooth Nortona Justera a The BFG Roalda Dahla. Metodologický rámec tvoří kritická diskurzivní analýza vedená prizmatem socio-kognitivního přístupu Teuna van Dijka. Samotná analýza se odvíjí od sociokulturního prostředí autorů a zaměřuje se na subverzi ve třech dyadických sekcích: vzdělávání a výchova, gender a identita, autorita a konvence. Práce ukazuje, že podstata nonsensu v těchto dílech podrývá nejen sociopolitické systémy naší společnosti, tedy naše vnímání moci a její distribuce ve společnosti, ale i základní komunikační principy. Výsledkem je potom zpochybnění stavebních kamenů naší reality, které se v zrcadle nonsensu jeví pouze jako arbitrární konglomerát konvencí, jež do značné míry definují naše vnímaní světa i sebe sama.
