An extraordinary success of Les Mystères de Paris at the time: analysis of factors determining the success of the serial novel by Eugène Sue

Abstract:

"Roman-feuilleton" or serial novel appeared in French society in the 19th century, and as a new genre of "mass literature" literally caused a revolution in the French life at the time. One of the most prolific pioneers of this genre was undoubtedly Eugène Sue. Nowadays, unfortunately, forgotten and for the general public less known author was, contrarily, in the middle of the 19th century, known as the "King" of the genre, and a huge success of his novels at the time of their publication exceeded even the boundaries of France. One of his most famous novels - Les Mystères de Paris - did not owe nothing to the reputation of its author, and, by its stories from the "underground" of Paris, it captivated an incredible number of readers who were every day expecting the denouement of an exciting story. What was the cause of such huge success, that the whole France lived more than one year the fate of the main characters of the Sue's novel, which became the most successful and best-selling serial novel at the time? We try to define it in our thesis, which consists of two parts: the first part is devoted to the development and formal characteristics of the serial novel as a genre of the "paraliterature". The aim of the second - and the main - part of our thesis is to analyze the factors that determined the success of Sue's novel.

"Roman-feuilleton" alebo román na pokračovanie sa objavil vo francúzskej spoločnosti v období 19. storočia, a ako nový žáner tzv. masovej literatúry spôsobil doslova revolúciu vo vtedajšom francúzskom živote. Jedným z najplodnejších priekopníkov tohto žánru bol bezpochyby Eugène Sue. Dnes bohužiaľ zabudnutý a pre širokú verejnosť menej známy autor bol naopak v polovici 19. storočia označovaný za "kráľa" tohto žánru a obrovský úspech v dobe vydávania jeho románov presiahol dokonca aj hranice Francúzska. Jeden z jeho najznámejších románov - Les Mystères de Paris - nezostal nič dlžný reputácii svojho autora a svojimi príbehmi z parížskeho "podzemia" si podmanil neuveriteľné množstvo čitateľov, ktorí denne očakávali rozuzlenie napínavej zápletky. Čo bolo príčinou tak veľkého úspechu, že celé Francúzsko prežívalo vyše roka osudy hlavných postáv Sueovho románu, ktorý sa tak stal najúspešnejším a najpredávanejším románom na pokračovanie v tomto období? To sa snažíme definovať v našej diplomovej práci, ktorá pozostáva z dvoch častí: prvá časť sa venuje historickému vývoju a formálnej charakteristike románu na pokračovanie ako žánru tzv. "paraliteratúry". Druhá - a zároveň hlavná - časť našej práce je venovaná samotnej analýze faktorov, ktoré determinovali úspech Sueovho románu.
