ELT Techniques for Attracting and Maintaining Students' Attention

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem výukových strategií a technik na pozornost dospělých studentů anglického jazyka. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. Teorie zahrnuje čtyři části – pozornost, význam pozornosti ve vyučovacím procesu, výukové metody a strategie a finálně jejich vliv na koncentraci studentů. První část posuzuje pozornost z několika dílčích aspektů, mezi nimiž jsou definice, fáze, typy, vlastnosti, vlivy a popisuje zjištění dvou významných výzkumů. Druhá část je věnována významu pozornosti ve vyučovacím procesu s detailnější analýzou ve vztahu k emocím. Ve třetí části je definován pojem metoda, představena klasifikace výukových metod se zřetelem na obecnou i oborovou didaktiku a vyložena metodologie v jazykovém vyučování. Poslední část obsahuje přehled doporučených postupů a strategií pro získání a udržení pozornosti při výuce. Empirická část vychází ze smíšeného výzkumného designu kvalitativního a kvantitativního přístupu. Jejím obsahem je analýza tří zaznamenaných vyučovacích hodin zaměřená na pozornost studentů a strategie k jejímu získání a udržení, které vyučující používali. Rozbor vychází ze zpracování dat škálového hodnocení jednotlivými studenty na konci vyučovacích hodin a polostrukturovaného rozhovoru provedeného v závěru šetření. Cílem práce je popsat strategie na základě doporučení z odborné literatury pro učitele a porovnat je s praxí lektorů anglického jazyka ve výuce dospělých studentů. V závěru práce je uvedeno pár návrhů pro učitele v souvislosti s rozvojem strategií pro získání a udržení pozornosti dospělých studentů angličtiny.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the teaching strategies and techniques influence on the attention of adult learners in teaching English. It consists of a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical section is divided into four segments - attention, importance of attention within the teaching process, teaching methods and strategies and finally their impact on student’s attention. The first unit views attention from several perspectives, amongst all e.g. definitions, phases, types, properties, influences; as well as demonstrates the findings of two important studies. The second part is targeting the importance of attention within the teaching process with careful analysis related to emotions. The term method is defined within the third part as well as the classification of teaching methods is introduced regarding general and subject didactics. It also explains the methodology in language teaching. The final part brings a survey of recommended procedures and strategies for gaining and maintaining attention in teaching. The empirical part is based on a mixed research design of a qualitative and quantitative approach. Its content is an analysis of three recorded lessons focused on strategies obtaining and maintaining the students' attention used by the teachers. The analysis deals with data provided by individual students at the end of the classes as well as a semi-structured interview conducted at the end of the survey. The aim of this work is to describe the strategies based on the recommendations from the literature for teachers and compare them with the experience of English language teachers teaching adult learners. The final part of the thesis provides several suggestions for teachers regarding the strategy development to gain and maintain the attention of English adult learners.
