The concept of the natural rate of interest and its quantification

Abstract:

Autor si klade za cíl metodologickou komparaci jednotlivých studií odhadujících přirozenou úrokovou míru a porovnání jejich výsledků. Zaměření práce je především na střednědobý a dlouhodobý koncept přirozené úrokové míry. Pojednání začíná krátkým úvodem do problematiky konceptu přirozené úrokové míry a jejího využití. Poté představuje základní determinanty, které ji ovlivňují, a následně popisuje teorii skrývající se pod kvantifikací odhadů přirozené úrokové míry na několika odlišných modelech. Dále provádí metodologickou komparaci modelů a porovnání jednotlivých odhadů přirozené úrokové míry, přičemž posledním bodem práce jest aplikace HP-filtru jako nástroje pro odhad přirozené úrokové míry a pokouší se nalézt odpověď na otázku, zdali je použití HP-filtru, v tomto kontextu, smysluplné. Autor dospěl k závěru, že odhady 3 porovnávaných metodik nejsou statisticky rozdílné až na metodiku Lubik-Matthes, ale i u té jen omezeně. Práce taktéž shledává významné rozdíly v odhadu přirozené míry přes HP-filtr a odhadů komplexnějších modelů (i po zahrnutí intervalů spolehlivosti).

Abstract:

The objective of this study is to conduct a methodological comparison of specific studies regarding the estimation of a natural rate of interest and compare their estimations. The study is mainly focused on the medium-term and long-term construct of the natural rate. It begins with a short introduction into the natural rate and its uses. Then it introduces primary determinants that influence it and basic theory that lies behind the estimation of the natural rate. Subsequently the study conducts a methodological comparison of certain studies and compares its estimations of the natural rate. Last part of this study is application of HP-filter as an instrument for estimating the natural rate and tries to find an answer, whether the application of HP-filter, in this context, is valid. Author concludes that the estimates of 3 compared methodologies are statistically indistinguishable apart from Lubik-Matthes methodology, although only marginally. The study also finds distinct differences between the estimation of the natural rate through HP-filter and other more complex models (even after incorporating confidence invervals).
