The Social Services for Seniors of the Chosen National Minority

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jaké jsou představy romských seniorů ve vybrané lokalitě o využití pečovatelské služby. V rámci teoretické přípravy autorka nejdříve definovala základní pojmy, z nichž vychází její práce pojmy senior, romská národnostní menšina, životní situace, služby sociální péče pro seniory. Metodologický rámec práce vymezily metody a techniky kvalitativního výzkumu. Autorka zjistila, že představy romských seniorů v Brně o využití pečovatelské služby jsou díky nízké informovanosti seniorů o této službě značně nejasné a zkreslené. Nepovažují se za cílovou skupinu této služby. Pečovatelská služba se jim vidí finančně nedostupná. Očekávají, že pečovatelská služba ve své nabídce zohlední typicky romskou soudržnost a péči vlastní rodiny o seniora. Přitom polovina z respondentů očekává, že nabízená služba bude zohledňovat i jejich etnickou příslušnost a problémy, které se na ni vážou. Seniorům, kteří se sami nehodnotí jako nesoběstační, ale pečovatelská služba je v duchu definice majoritní společnosti jako takové vnímá, pečovatelská služba své služby teoreticky vnucuje. Tato služba je tedy v mnoha ohledech nastavena pro zkvalitňování života neromských seniorů, ale nikoli pro zkvalitnění života romských seniorů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to determine how Gypsy seniors of a chosen locality perceive the advantage of home care. First the author defined the basic terms of her work the terms senior, Gypsy minority group, life situation, social services for seniors. The methodological framework of this thesis was defined by methods and techniques of qualitative research. Based on those the author established that Gypsy seniors in Brno are little aware of the advantages home care offers, and thus their perceptions of it are distorted and far from clear. They do not see themselves as an objective group of this kind of social service. They find home care as financially unavailable to them. Moreover, these seniors believe that home care should respect the traditional Gypsy solidarity as well as the care a family takes of its senior. At least one half of the chosen respondents expect that home care will also respect their ethnic origin and the problems connected to it. These seniors do see themselves as self-sufficient; however, home care by the definition of self-sufficiency perceives them by majority as non-self-sufficient. As a result home care might theoretically inflict itself to Gypsy seniors. Thus, this social service is only committed to raising life quality of non-Gypsy seniors, but not those Gypsy ones.
