Comparison of appreciation of stocks and precious metals

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou investování do cyklických a proticyklických aktiv. Jako cyklická aktiva byly vybrány akcie zastoupené indexem Dow Jones Industrial Average, proticyklická aktiva jsou reprezentována zlatem a stříbrem. Teoretická část popisuje všechna tři aktiva, jejich výhody a nevýhody, faktory ovlivňující jejich cenu a možnosti jejich pořízení. Dále je v teoretické části rozebráno zkoumané období, jež se pohybuje od roku 1915 do současného roku 2020. Analytická část se zabývá porovnáním držby jednotlivých aktiv a jejich střídáním podle ekonomických cyklů a ukazatelů Dow/Gold ratio a Dow/Silver ratio. Práce prokázala, že střídání cyklických a proticyklických aktiv podle ekonomických cyklů je mnohonásobně efektivnější, nežli pouhý nákup a držba jednoho aktiva pod dobu sledovaného období.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of investing in cyclical and countercyclical assets. Shares represented by the Dow Jones Industrial Average were selected as cyclical assets, countercyclical assets are represented by gold and silver. The theoretical part describes all three assets, their advantages and disadvantages, factors affecting their price and acquisition options. Furthermore, the theoretical part analyzes the research period, which ranges from 1915 to the current year 2020. The analytical part deals with the comparison of holding individual assets and their rotation according to economic cycles and indicators Dow/Gold ratio and Dow/Silver ratio. The work showed that the alternation of cyclical and countercyclical assets according to economic cycles is many times more efficient than just buying and holding one asset during the research period.
