The German myths and legends of the Jeseníky mountains and their reception in the Czech culture

Abstract:

My thesis deals with the German and Czech myths, legends and fairy tales from the Silesian region of the Jeseníky mountains (formerly known in German as the Altvatergebirge) in the north of the Czech Republic. The Jeseníky mountains were formally inhabited mainly by German speaking people, but after 1945 the region became Slavonic again. The analysis deals with the original German legends as well as the intercultural reception and perception of the German legends and fairy tales in the Czech culture from the 19th century to the present. In order to provide more information about the intercultural phenomena in these texts, methodic concepts such as cultural comparison,cultural change and cultural transfer are used. The empirical part of the thesis does comparatively analyse several different legends and fairy tales in order to identify their similarities and the differences between them. The analysis part focuses on the texts of Josef Lowag and Anton Peter as well as on several Czech collections of legends and fairy tales, for instance the book of legends by Sotiris Joanidis. The comparative method will be used to find out which elements of the German legends the Czech authors brought into their own culture and which they did not. In my opinion after 1945, due to migration processes, a cultural change and some form of cultural transfer occurred in the Jeseníky region, which led to a change of the legends and myths of this region. The characteristics of this change are documented by comparing the different versions of the fairy tale characters the Altvater ("Old father"), the Seehirte ("lake shepherd") and the so called "Winterman" from the mountain shelter Schweizerei, who play an important role in many of the region's legends. Furthermore, it will be shown that the old German legends and fairy tales were used by the new Czech population after 1945 to acquire more information about their new homeland. In addition to this the thesis shows that after 1945 Czech writers integrated some legends about mining ghosts and little spiritual beings such as gnomes, dwarfs and goblins into their Czech culture, which were previously not (well) known to the Slavonic people, which includes several legends from Lowags Altvatersagen and Schlesische Volk- und Bergmanns-Sagen.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá českými a německými pověstmi z Jesenicka na severovýchodě České republiky. V centru pozornosti stojí interkulturní recepce pověstí, pohádek a legend. Užitými metodickými východisky jsou kulturní srovnání, kulturní proměna a kulturní transfer. V empirické části práce je provedena srovnávací analýza jednotlivých zpracování vybraných pověsťových látek. Pověsti a pohádky, které jsou zde analyzovány, pocházejí jak od německy píšících autorů, mezi něž patří např. Josef Lowag a Anton Peter, tak také od česky píšících autorů, jako jsou Sotiris Joanidis a Oldřich Šuleř. Výsledkem analýzy je potvrzení výchozí teze, že po roce 1945 došlo v regionu ke kulturní proměně a výměně, při níž byly původní pověsti, pohádky a legendy pozměněny. Tato změna se dotkla např. známých postav Praděda, Jezerního pastýře a Zimního muže z horské chaty Švýcárna. Lidové pověsti navíc posloužily jako prostředek kulturního transferu po výměně obyvatelstva v roce 1945. Práce také ukazuje, jak čeští autoři po roce 1945 přenášeli pověsti z oblasti hornictví do české kultury, v níž se doposud objevovaly jen výjimečně.Týká se to především pověstí o horských duchách a malých strašidlech, jako jsou např.gnómové, trpaslíci a koboldové.
