Posttraumatic growth following spinal cord injury

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na možné přínosy traumatu spojeného s poraněním míchy. Představuje některé základní informace o tom, jakou podobu má jev označovaný jako posttraumatický rozvoj u cílové skupiny osob se získaným poškozením míchy. Snaží se vytvořit základy pro další důkladné zkoumání problematiky pozitivních následků traumatu vznikajícím v souvislosti s životní zkušeností poškození míchy, a to v rámci České republiky. Jedním z cílů této práce je upozornit na skutečnost, že vůbec nějaké přínosy traumatu spojeného s poraněním míchy existují, a rozšířit povědomí o posttraumatickém rozvoji u lidí se získaným poškozením míchy mezi sociálními a akademickými pracovníky, kteří se touto cílovou skupinou zabývají. Z analýzy výsledků výzkumu vyplývá, že u respondentů došlo k posttraumatickému rozvoji ve všech zkoumaných doménách, stanovených na základě konceptu posttraumatického rozvoje Calhouna a Tedeschiho - tedy v doménách osobní odolnosti, nových možností, vztahů k druhým lidem, ocenění života i duchovní změny. Nejrozsáhlejší a nejpestřejší výsledky byly zjištěny v rámci domény nových možností a vztahů k druhým lidem. V těchto doménách respondenti popisovali rozvoj především v podobě nalezení nových volnočasových aktivit, nových možností v oblasti vzdělávání i zaměstnání. V doméně vztahů k druhým lidem se rozvoj objevuje zejména v oblasti vztahů s rodinou a přáteli, které se zlepšují mj. díky ověření podpory rodiny a přátel v nové životní situaci. Ve vztazích k druhým lidem může dojít ke zlepšení v podobě častějšího a snadnějšího navazování kontaktu s druhými, a tudíž rozšíření okruhu přátel a známých, a dále také v podobě posílení empatie s druhými.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis focuses on possible benefits of a related with spinal cord injury. It presents basic information about which shape does the phenomenon called postumatic growth have for target group of people with spinal cord injury. It tries to make some basis for further detailed exploration of positive consequences of a connected with the life experience of spinal cord injury in the Czech republic. One of the main purposes of this work is to point out the fact, that some positive consequences of a connected with the spinal cord injury do exist, and to extend the knowledge about the postumatic growth of people with spinal cord injury between the social and academic workers, who are concerned with this target group. Based on the analysis of the gained data it came out that respondents experience posttraumatic growth in all the domains set according to the concept of posttraumatic growth of Calhoun and Tedeschi - it means in domain of personal strength, new possibilities, relationships to the others, appreciation of life and spiritual change. The most vast and most varied outcomes were find out in domains of new possibilities and relationships to the others. In these domains the respondents described the growth mainly in the shape of discovering some new free time activities, new possibilities in education and in occupation, in the domain of relationships to the others they described the growth mainly in the area of relationships with family and friends, which they described as better, besides other things thanks to verification of the support of family and friends after the spinal cord injury. In this area there might be also the growth in the shape of more frequent and easier making contacts with the others, and thanks to this the enlargement of their social network, and also in the shape of strengthening empathy.
