Attribution Theory in the Context of a Czech Upper Secondary School

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá faktory, kterým žáci přisuzují svůj úspěch či neúspěch při studiu angličtiny. Cílem práce je aplikovat teorii atribuce na české střední škole za účelem zprostředkování informací ohledně názorů žáků učitelům této školy (včetně autorky této práce), které by mohly být využity k podpoře učebních výsledků. Konkrétně si dává práce za cíl zjistit, které aktivity v hodinách angličtiny vnímají žáci jako nejvíce/nejméně úspěšné, určit důvody úspěchu/neúspěchu v těchto aktivitách a ověřit jejich teoretickou dimenzionalitu. Data byla získána za pomoci existujícího dotazníku určeného ke zjišťování atribučních tendencí žáků a analyzována prostřednictvím deskriptivní statistiky a faktorové analýzy. Výsledky odhalily, že čtení, hraní her a vyjadřování názoru žáci považují za nejúspěšnější aktivity v hodinách angličtiny, zatímco mluvení, učení se gramatiky a psaní eseje vnímají jako aktivity nejméně úspěšné. Atribuční tendence žáků jsou převážně adaptivní a zdravé – zatímco úspěch byl přisuzován především vnitřním, stabilním a ovlivnitelným faktorům (jako například motivaci získat dobrou známku, schopnostem či prostě tomu, že žáky angličtina baví), svůj neúspěch dávali žáci za vinu hlavně proměnlivým faktorům (nezájem o aktivitu, nevhodná strategie či náročnost úkolu). Teoretická dimenzionalita atribucí byla částečně prokázána. Přestože závěry práce svědčí o tom, že není třeba usilovat o významnou změnu co se týče žákovských přesvědčení, výsledky odhalily několik příležitostí k podpoře žákovského učení na základě jejich atribučních tendencí.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis explores student causal attributions for success and failure in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Its main objective is to examine attribution theory in the context of a Czech upper secondary school to bring valuable information about the beliefs of the students to the teachers of that school (including the author of the thesis) that could be used to enhance student learning. Specifically, the thesis aims to determine the most/least successful activities in an EFL class as perceived by the students, identify the causes of success/failure in those activities and examine the validity of the dimensionality proposed by the theory. One of the most prominent attributional questionnaires was used to gather data about students’ beliefs. The data were examined using descriptive statistics and factor analysis. The findings revealed that reading, playing games and expressing an opinion are the most successful activities while speaking, learning grammar, and writing an essay are the least successful ones. The attributions the students made were found to be adaptive and healthy – they attributed their success mostly to internal, stable, and controllable causes (such as the motivation to get a good grade, enjoyment, or ability) and tended to ascribe their failure to unstable causes (lack of interest, inap-propriate strategy, or difficulty of the task). The dimensionality of attributions as proposed by the theory was partially confirmed. Though the results imply there is no need for substantial attribution retraining, several opportunities for enhancing student learning based on their attributional patterns were identified.
