Beyond the curtain: integrating theatre into foreign language teaching and practical alternatives for the classroom

Abstract:

This study explores the integration of theatre into foreign language teaching and seeks to bring engagement and vitality to foreign language teaching through examples of FLE teaching. It emphasizes the need for lively and entertaining foreign language teaching to stimulate students' motivation. The research explores the historical application of theatre in the classroom and its practical implementation in classrooms lacking actual theatre courses. Through surveys administered to high school French students and teachers, the study assesses the impact of theatre on language proficiency and personal development. The main question revolves around the effective application of the theoretical benefits of theatre in mainstream classrooms. The results suggest that theatre goes beyond merely improving language skills and contributes significantly to students' personal development. This work proposes adaptable theatre-inspired activities to improve targeted language skills and promote personal development. Despite the challenges of incorporating these activities into regular lessons, the research highlights the need to find a balanced approach. This balance involves incorporating theatre elements that support language proficiency without overwhelming the constraints of a typical lesson length. This thesis encourages educators, even those without access to theatre groups, to explore the benefits of incorporating theatre into language learning. Despite the obstacles, the study aims to provide accessible alternatives and seeks to motivate educators to make language learning a vibrant and enriching experience for students.

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá integrací divadla do výuky cizích jazyků a snaží se vnést do výuky cizích jazyků angažovanost a vitalitu na základě ukázek výuky FLE. Zdůrazňuje nutnost živé a zábavné výuky cizích jazyků, která by podněcovala motivaci studentů. Výzkum zkoumá historické uplatnění divadla ve výuce a jeho praktickou implementaci ve třídách, kde chybí konkrétní divadelní kurzy. Prostřednictvím průzkumů provedených mezi středoškolskými studenty francouzštiny a pedagogy studie hodnotí vliv divadla na jazykové znalosti a osobnostní rozvoj. Hlavní otázka se točí kolem efektivní aplikace teoretických výhod divadla v běžných třídách. Výsledky naznačují, že divadlo přesahuje pouhé zlepšení jazykových dovedností a významně přispívá k osobnímu rozvoji studentů. Tato práce navrhuje adaptabilní aktivity inspirované divadlem, které mají zlepšit cílené jazykové dovednosti a podpořit osobnostní rozvoj. Navzdory výzvám, které přináší zařazení těchto aktivit do běžné výuky, výzkum zdůrazňuje potřebu najít vyvážený přístup. Tato rovnováha zahrnuje začlenění divadelních prvků podporujících jazykové znalosti, aniž by zahlcovaly omezení typické délky vyučovací hodiny. Diplomová práce vybízí pedagogy, a to i ty, kteří nemají přístup k divadelním kroužkům, aby prozkoumali přínosy začlenění divadla do jazykového vzdělávání. Navzdory překážkám si studie klade za cíl poskytnout dostupné alternativy a usiluje o motivaci pedagogů, aby se výuka jazyků stala pro studenty živou a obohacující zkušeností.
