Do you trust “your” politician? Partisan bias with regard to social identity and political attitudes

Abstract:

Každý politik někdy lže. Pro správné fungování demokracie je však důležité, jak tyto lži vnímají voliči, a zda je hodnotí objektivně. Pro zachycení možného dvojího metru v hodnocení lží jsem sestavil mezi-skupinový experiment o dvou podmínkách (ideo-logická nebo osobní lež). Dále mne zajímalo, zda je tato možná asymetrie v důvěře vedena respondentovou sociální identitou. Tohoto výzkumu na důvěru ve smyšle-ného konzervativního politika se účastnilo 245 lidí ze 101 facebookových a telegramových skupin s politickým laděním. Respondenti byli náhodně rozděleni do jedné ze dvou podmínek lišících se typem lži, kterou politik šířil. U respondentů jsem zkoumal jejich důvěru v politika po tom, co si přečetli novinový článek, který uváděl, že politik lhal. Předpokládal jsem, že respondenti budou politikovi více důvě-řovat, pokud lhal ideologicky, než když lhal o svém osobním životě. Tuto asymetrii jsem podpořil a domnívám se, že mezi voliči existuje dvojí metr při hodnocení lží politiků. Dále mne zajímalo, zda politikovi důvěřují více lidé z jeho vlastní skupiny při ideologickém lhaní, a ti z cizí skupiny mu při tomto typu lhaní důvěřují méně. Pro odlišení těchto lidí jsem zvolil konstrukty pravicové a levicové autoritářství. Pravicové autoritářství zvyšovalo důvěru v konzervativního politika bez rozdílu v typu lži. Le-vicové autoritářství však nedokázalo účinně odlišit politikovu cizí skupinu, což pova-žuji za specifikum české politické kultury. V explorativní části jsem dále objevil, že rozdílnost v důvěře napříč lžemi nejlépe vysvětlil pocit ohrožení statusu vlastní sku-piny. V diskuzi nabízím možné zapojení důvěry a nedůvěry v populistická prohlášení jako určující faktor důvěry v daného politika.

Abstract:

Every politician lies sometimes. However, for the proper functioning of democracy, it is important to consider how political falsehoods are perceived by voters and whether they evaluate them objectively. To capture possible double standards in evaluating falsehoods, I conducted a between-group experiment with two condi-tions (ideological or personal falsehood). I was interested in whether this potential asymmetry in trust was driven by respondents' social identities. This research on trust in a fictional conservative politician involved 245 people from 101 Face-book and Telegram politically oriented groups. Respondents were randomly as-signed to one of two conditions, differing in the type of falsehood spread by the politician. I examined respondents' trust in the politician after they read a newspaper article stating that the politician had lied. I hypothesized that respond-ents would trust politicians more if they had lied ideologically than when they had lied about their personal life. I found support for this asymmetry and further believe that there is a double standard among voters in evaluating politicians' falsehoods. I was also interested in whether people from the politicians' in-group trust the poli-ticians more when they lie ideologically and those from an out-group trust them less in this type of falsehood. To distinguish between these individuals, I chose con-structs of right-wing and left-wing authoritarianism. Right-wing authoritarianism increased trust in the conservative politician regardless of the type of falsehood. Furthermore, left-wing authoritarianism failed to effectively distinguish the politician's out-group, which I consider a characteristic of Czech political culture. In the exploratory analysis, I further found that the variability in trust across false-hoods was best explained by the sense of status threat within one's in-group. In the discussion, I offer the possible involvement of trust and distrust in populist state-ments as a determining factor of trust in the given politician.
