Transformation of the Concept of Power in the 20th Century. Idea of Power: From Social Order to the Individual

Abstract:

Disertační práce pojednává o problematice moci ve společnosti v souvislosti s proměnami vztahu jedinců ke společenskému řádu. Moc je chápána v nejširším slova smyslu jako ovládání či dominance („power over“), nejedná se tedy pouze o moc politickou. Cílem práce je odpovědět na otázku, jak se pojetí moci specificky proměnilo ve století dvacátém a zda zvýšený zájem, který mu teoretici věnují, nějak koresponduje s nárůstem či výraznou proměnou tohoto fenoménu. Prvním předpokladem je, že původní chápání společenského řádu jako útvaru jedince zcela přesahujícího se změnilo s teoriemi společenské smlouvy, v nichž je jedinci dán jistý podíl na jeho tvorbě a udržování, s čímž zároveň vzniká první prostor pro jeho individualitu a prosazování zájmů vůči společnosti. Teorie společenské smlouvy ukazuje jedince jako podřízeného společnosti a zároveň spolupodílejícího se na vytvoření jejích pravidel. Z tohoto vyrůstá zcela nová, moderní dynamika moci, kde již figuruje jedinec oscilující mezi podřízeností řádu a možností jeho utváření. Prvotní individualismus se dále rozvíjel a sílil až do současnosti, která bývá teoretiky nahlížena jako období krajního individualismu až narcismu, v němž se individualizovaný jedinec už zcela přestal vztahovat ke společenskému řádu a prosazování svých zájmů mu zcela nadřadil. V tomto smyslu doznalo změn i pojetí moci. Moc je nyní chápána jako jev, který se může vyskytovat mezi kýmkoli, nejen mezi vládnoucími a ovládanými, a jedinec stále více chápe požadavky společnosti či druhého jako represivní a omezující jeho vlastní zájem a individuální štěstí. Druhou stranou mince je skutečnost, že jedinec, zaměřený na vytváření svého vlastního světa sobě na míru, se podle toho vztahuje ke svému okolí jako k místu, které ovládá k obrazu svému a které mu slouží k uspokojování jeho zájmů. V otázce moci se však odehrál ještě jeden významný posun související s chápáním vnějšího světa jako represivního. Moc se přesunula do fiktivní roviny. Dominance a ovládání existují zdánlivě pouze ve sféře představ (jsou pociťovány, což však neimplikuje existenci jejich skutečného zdroje), jedinci jim však přizpůsobují svoje jednání. Dominance tedy takto přímo nepramení ze společenské reality, ale z představy této společenské reality; moc tak změnila působiště: z vnějšího nátlaku se stala nátlakem vnitřním. Přijmeme-li předpoklad, že dnešní společnost je společností silně individualizovanou, můžeme učinit závěr, že je také více prostoupena mocenskými vztahy než kdykoli předtím.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the question of power in society with its connection to social order, especially with the connection to the changes of the relationship between the individual and society. Power is understood in the broadest sense as dominance or control (“power over”). The aim of the thesis is to answer the question of how the concept of power changed in the 20th century and whether the big focus placed on this topic by many authors and scientists corresponds with an increase or significant change of this phenomenon. The first assumption is that the original understanding of social order which was developed in ancient philosophy and which understands social order as something highly exceeding the individual has changed in the theories of social contract. In these theories, the understanding of the individual as somebody who participates in the creation of the social order begins. At the same time, theories of social order have created a space for understanding man as an individual who asserts his interests against the interests of society. Theories of social order understand the individual as subordinated to society but in the same way as someone who participates in the creation of society's rules. From this understanding a new, modern dynamics of power has arisen where the individual is understood as subordinated and powerful at the same time. The first individualism represented by theories of social order has grown stronger until nowadays. Today's society is seen by many authors as a time of strong individualism or even narcissism, in which the fully individualized man has ceased to relate to any social order and asserting his own interests has become the most important value of his life. Along with these changes, the conception of power has also changed. Power is now understood as a phenomenon which can exist in every human relation, between everybody (not only between rulers and the ruled). Furthermore, the individual understands society's demands as more and more repressive. For the individual of this new time, society primarily represents a repression of his own interests and happiness. The individual is focused only on his own interests, on the creation of his own world in which every need is fulfilled, so his relations to the outer world follow this way of thinking: the outer world is a place which must be dominated. There has been one last important change in the conception of power which is related to the understanding of the outer world as repressive. Power's nature has started to become more and more fictive. Dominance exists more as an idea or a product of the imagination (dominance is perceived which does not imply the existence of its source in the outer world), however, this idea produces a real change in people's behavior. The dominance has therefore somehow changed its operation space from the outer world to the inner world of every individual. In summary, if we accept the assumption that today's society is a society with highly increased individualism, we can also conclude that it is more pervaded by relations of power.
