Implementation of the chemically oriented experiments using mobile phone as a detector.

Abstract:

Badatelsky orientovaná výuka je metoda vysoce aktivizující a poslední dobou velmi diskutovaná. V chemii se nám k tomuto pojetí výuky nabízí využít experiment. Pokud se nám tyto experimenty podaří co nejvíce přiblížit skutečným postupům vědce, tedy skutečnému bádání, nabývá metoda o to větší hodnotu. K takové úpravě je však třeba přístrojů, které jsou schopny pozorované jevy vhodně zaznamenat, a ne vždy jsou tato zařízení na škole dostupná. Proto bylo sestaveno několik nástrojů, které po propojení s mobilním telefonem fungují jako spektrofotometr, fotometr/turbidimetr a polarimetr, a tak nabízejí levnou alternativu ke komerčně dostupným přístrojům. U těchto zařízení byla experimentálně ověřena jejich funkčnost a ke každému byl sestaven podrobný návod na sestavení. Na základě takto připravených přístrojů a měření, které jsou schopny provést, pak bylo připraveno 8 badatelsky orientovaných úloh. Úlohy obsahují teoretický úvod k úloze, pracovní list pro studenty, zpracované výsledky experimentálního ověření úlohy a metodický list pro učitele. Výsledkem práce jsou tedy funkční nástroje využívající mobilní telefon jako detektor, návody na sestavení těchto nástrojů, případně aplikací nutných k jejich využití a sada badatelsky orientovaných úloh připravených k praktickému ověření. Úlohy prezentované v práci mají potenciál studentům usnadnit a prohloubit pochopení principů spojených s metodami využitých v úlohách, zvýšit jejich zájem o chemii, zlepšit jejich manuální zručnost a představit mobilní telefon jako zařízení sloužící ke sběru, uchování a zpracování informací.

Abstract:

Inquiry-based learning is a highly activating method and has been widely discussed recently. In chemistry teaching, the use of experiments is quite an obvious option for this teaching method. If we manage to bring these experiments as close as possible to the real procedures of the scientists, the method becomes even more valuable. However, such an adjustment requires devices that can properly detect the observed phenomena, and these devices are not always available at school. As a solution, several devices have been created which, when combined with a mobile phone, function as a spectrophotometer, photometer/turbidimeter, and polarimeter, thus offering a cheap alternative to commercially available devices. The functionality of these instruments was then experimentally verified and detailed assembly instructions were compiled for each. Based on the devices prepared in this way and the measurements we can perform using these devices, 8 inquiry-based tasks were prepared. The tasks contain a theoretical introduction to the task, a worksheet for students, processed results of experimental verification of the task, and a methodological sheet for teachers. The results of the work are functional devices that use mobile phone as a detector, instructions for assembling these devices, and a set of inquiry-based tasks ready for practical verification. The tasks presented in this work have the potential to ease and enhance students' understanding of the principles associated with the methods used in the tasks, increase their interest in chemistry, improve their manual dexterity and introduce the mobile phone as a device for collecting, storing, and processing information.
