The role of parent-adolescent relationships in career decision-making among high school students

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, zda a jak spolu souvisí profesní rozhodování, autonomie a citová vazba ve vztahu k rodičům. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 211 studentů čtyřletých a osmiletých gymnázií předposledních ročníků. Výzkum se uskutečnil přímo ve školách ve valašském regionu pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Výsledky v souladu se zjištěními dřívějších výzkumů v této oblasti ukázaly, že je jistá citová vazba predik-torem subjektivně pociťované vyšší míry autonomie i menších obtíží při profesním rozhodování v adolescenci. Vyšší úroveň vnímané autonomie pak také sama znamenala vyšší profesní rozhodnutost u studentů. Výsledky této práce následně prokázaly, že je autonomie mediátorem vztahu mezi citovou vazbou a profesním rozhodováním studentů. Oproti dřívějším výzkumům však nebyl zjištěn rozdíl mezi vlivem jisté citové vazby k matce a jisté citové vazby k otci na obtíže při profesním rozhodování, ani na míru subjektivně vnímané autonomie. Závěr práce je věnován jak diskuzi ohledně výsledků a limitů studie, tak možnému zaměření budoucích výzkumů a aplikaci výsledků v kariérním poradenství a individuální či rodinné psychoterapii.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine whether and how career decision-making, autonomy and attachment in relation to the parents are related. The research sample consisted of 211 students of four-year and eight-year grammar schools in the last year before graduating. The research was cunducted at schools in the wallachian region using questionnaire survey. Results, corresponding with the previous research findings have shown that a secure attachment is predictor of subjectively prceived higher degree of autonomy and fewer difficulties in career decisions in adolescence. Higher level of perceived autonomy is also a predictor of easier career decision-making among students. The results of this study then showed that autonomy is a mediator of the relationship between attachment and students´career decisions. However, in contrast to earlier research, this study found no difference between the influence of secure attachment to mother and secure attachment to father to difficulties and career decision-making or the intensity of subjectively perceived autonomy. The conclusion is devoted to the discussion of the results and limits of the study and the possible focus of future research and application of the results in career counseling and individual or family psycho-therapy.
