The impact of immigration on the crime rate in selected states of the European Union from 2008 to 2019

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá vliv imigrace na míru násilné a mravnostní kriminality v České republice, Estonské republice, Irské republice, Kyperské republice, Litevské republice, Maltské republice, Rakouské republice, Řecké republice, Slovinské republice, Spolkové republice Německo a Španělském království v letech 2008 až 2020. Zkoumaná data, vycházející ze statistik Eurostatu, tvoří panelový datový soubor. Hypotézy jsou testovány pomocí metody fixních efektů. Testovaná hypotéza o negativním vlivu imigrace na míru násilné kriminality je zamítnuta. Z výsledků modelu vyplývá, že vzájemný vztah je nesignifikantní, a tedy imigrace neovlivňuje míru násilné kriminality. Druhá testovaná hypotéza o negativním působení imigrace na míru mravnostní kriminality není zamítnuta. Model odhaduje, že pokud vzroste imigrace o 1 %, ceteris paribus je předpokládán nárůst míry mravnostní kriminality o 18,7 %. Ovšem model je schopen vysvětlit pouze 35,3 % variability mravnostní kriminality, a proto je třeba výsledné zjištění brát s rezervou.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis examines the influence of immigration on the rate of violent and moral crime in the Czech Republic, the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of Cyprus, the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Malta, the Republic of Austria, the Hellenic Republic, the Republic of Slovenia, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of Spain between 2008 and 2020. The examined data, based on Eurostat statistics, form a panel dataset. Hypotheses are tested using the fixed effects method. The tested hypothesis about the negative effect of immigration on the rate of violent crime is rejected. The results of the model show that the relationship is insignificant, and therefore immigration does not affect the rate of violent crime. The second tested hypothesis about the negative effect of immigration on the level of moral crime is not rejected. The model estimates that if immigration increases by 1 %, ceteris paribus, an increase in moral crime rate by 18.7 % is expected. However, the model is able to explain only 35.3 % of the variability of moral crime, and therefore the resulting findings must be taken with a grain of salt.
