The use of in vitro cultures for effect assessment of persistent organic pollutants on plants

Abstract:

Polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky (PAHs) jsou významnou skupinou organických polutantů. Mnohé PAHs vykazují karcinogenní, mutagenní a teratogenní účinky. PAHs jsou charakterizovány jako sloučeniny toxické, perzistentní a bioakumulativní, vyskytující se ve všech složkách životního prostředí. Rostliny jsou schopny tyto sloučeniny z prostředí přijímat, transformovat a akumulovat. Rostliny stojící na počátku potravního řetězce umožňují vstup těchto toxických sloučenin do vyšších trofických úrovní. Rostlinné tkáňové kultury, které doposud nebyly využity při studiu vlivu organických polutantů, se mohou stát, vzhledem ke své relativně malé prostorové a finanční náročnosti, vhodným experimentálním nástrojem.

Abstract:

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important group of organic pollutants. Many PAHs are carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic. PAHs are characterized as toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative compounds which occur in all parts of the environment. Plants have abilities to take up, transform and accumulate these compounds. Plants standing at the beginning of the food chain enable the xenobiotic compounds to penetrate into the higher trophic levels. Plant tissue cultures have not yet been used for study of organic pollutants. They may be a suitable experimental tool, with the regard to their relatively little spatial and financial demands.
