Occurrence of enostoses in the Central European population and evaluation of their usability for individual identification

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis was to describe and evaluate the occurrence of enos-toses for individual identification of remains of unknown origin, in the material from the database of post-mortem CT scans from the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Hradec Králové and from the database of CT scans of living individuals from Motol University Hospital in Prague. The Amira program was used for the visual evaluation of the volume data. The incidence of enostoses was assessed in relation to age and gender of the individuals. The side dependence was also evaluated. Enostoses were found in the database of post-mortem CT scans in 71 individuals out of 100, a total of 57 men and 14 women were positive individuals. There were 17 individuals with the positive findings in the database of CT scans of the lower jaw of living individuals, of which 10 were men and 7 women. The occurrence of enostoses in the relation to sex was confirmed in both databases. The link between the occurrence of enostoses and age was confirmed for women from both databases. The lateral dependence was sta-tistically confirmed only for women from the CT database of living individuals. Based on the obtained data, it is not possible to evaluate the overall suitability of the occur-rence of enostoses for the individual identification.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo popsat a vyhodnotit výskyt enostóz pro individuální identifikaci pozůstatků neznámého původu v materiálu z databáze posmrtných CT záznamů z Ústavu soudního lékařství v Hradci Králové a z databáze CT záznamů žijících osob z Fakultní Nemocnice Motol v Praze. Pro vizuální vyhodnocení objemových dat byl použit software Amira. Výskyt enostóz byl vyhodnocen v závislosti na věku a pohlaví. Dále byla zhodnocena stranová závislost. Enostózy byly zjištěny u 71 ze 100 jedinců v databázi postmortálních CT vyšetření, celkový počet pozitivních jedinců byl 57 mužů a 14 žen. V databázi CT snímků dolní čelisti žijících jedinců bylo pozitivních 17 jedinců, z toho 10 mužů a 7 žen. V obou databázích byla potvrzena souvislost výskytu s pohlavím. Souvislost výskytu enostóz a věku byla potvrzena u žen v obou databázích. Laterální závislost byla statisticky potvrzena pouze u žen z databáze CT živých jedinců. Na základě získaných údajů nelze zhodnotit celkovou vhodnost enostóz pro individuální identifikaci.
