Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá analýzou skupiny štyroch anglických adjektív awful, dreadful, horrible a terrible, ktoré sa bežne považujú za synonymné výrazy. Cieľom práce je skúmať kolokácie daných adjektív so substantívami a zistiť, či je možné nájsť rozdiely v ich použití a význame. Východiskom pre daný výskum sú dáta, ktoré boli získané z Britského národného korpusu. Táto práca je rozdelená na teoretickú a praktickú časť. V teoretickej časti sa čitateľ oboznámi s pojmami z oblasti lingvistiky, ktoré sú pre túto prácu kľúčové. Teoretická časť práce je rozdelená na štyri podkapitoly. Pojednáva sa v nich o adjektívach, synonymii, kolokáciách a korpusovej lingvistike. Praktická časť pozostáva z troch hlavných podkapitol. Substantíva, ktoré na základe dát získaných z Britského národného korpusu tvoria kolokácie so skúmanými adjektívami, sú v prvej podkapitole rozdelené do desiatich sémantických skupín. Na základe špecifických kritérií sú následne vybraté tie skupiny substantív, ktoré budú v práci predmetom ďalšieho štúdia. Druhá podkapitola v rámci praktickej časti práce ponúka prehľad slovníkových definícií skúmaných adjektív. Tretia podkapitola praktickej časti je zameraná na samotný výskum adjektív, ktorý vychádza z dát získaných z Britského národného korpusu. Na základe výsledkov výskumu je možné zaradiť adjektíva awful, dreadful, horrible a terrible medzi kognitívne synonymá.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis of a selected group of English adjectives awful, dreadful, horrible and terrible, which are generally regarded as synonyms. The aim of this thesis is to examine the adjective-noun collocations and to find out whether the adjectives differ in their use and meaning or not. Research is based on the data taken from the British National Corpus (BNC). The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part provides the reader with a necessary theoretical background. It comprises four subchapters, which deal with the notion of adjectives, synonymy, collocations an corpus linguistics. The practical part consists of three main subchapters. In the first subchapter, the nouns which in the BNC collocate with the adjectives analysed are divided into ten semantic groups. Subsequently, the criteria for choosing the semantic subgroups of nouns which will be further examined in the practical part of the thesis are established. The second subchapter examines the dictionary definitions of the studied adjectives. The actual use of the adjectives awful, dreadful, horrible and terrible based on the data from the BNC is examined in the last chapter of the practical part. According to the results of my research, it may be concluded that the adjectives awful, dreadful, horrible and terrible are cognitive synonyms.
