Defensive Pessimism and Its Role in Cognitive Processes of Individuals Suffering from Anorexia Nervosa: A Qualitative Exploratory Study

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu souvislosti psychických procesů uplatňujících se v mechanismu udržování mentální anorexie a v rámci kognitivní strategie defenzivního pesimismu. Cílem studie bylo proto zmapovat a popsat psychické procesy a faktory včetně jejich vzájemných interakcí, které se z pohledu osob trpících mentální anorexií zapojují do mechanismu udržování jejich onemocnění, a identifikovat jejich vztahy k psychickým procesům utvářejícím mechanismus fungování defenzivního pesimismu. Pro realizaci výzkumu byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkumný design v podobě interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s participantkami z řad osob trpících mentální anorexií (n = 6). Výsledky výzkumu zahrnují hloubkovou deskripci jednotlivých psychických jevů relevantních dle reflexí participantek v udržování jejich onemocnění a taktéž rekonstrukci vzájemných vztahů a interakcí spojujících tyto jevy do celku mechanismu udržování mentální anorexie u participantek. Komparace těchto výsledků s procesy uplatňujícími se v mechanismu fungování defenzivního pesimismu odhalila zásadní podobnosti vypovídající o možné roli defenzivně pesimistických kognitivních procesů v udržování mentální anorexie u participantek. Studie tak nabízí předběžné nástiny souvislostí mezi diskutovanými analytickými konstrukty a představuje nové téma pro výzkum problematiky udržování mentální anorexie.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the connection between psychological processes involved in the maintenance mechanism of anorexia nervosa and those associated with the cognitive strategy of defensive pessimism. Therefore, the study aimed to map and describe the psychological processes and factors involved in the maintenance mechanism of anorexia nervosa from the perspective of those suffering from the disorder, and to identify their relationships to the psychological processes shaping the mechanism of functioning of defensive pessimism. The study was conducted by implementing a qualitative research design in the form of interpretive phenomenological analysis of semi-structured interviews with participants suffering from anorexia nervosa (n = 6). The results of the study include an in-depth descripti-on of psychological phenomena that are involved from the participants‘ perspective in the maintenance of their eating disorder, as well as a reconstruction of the interrelationships and interactions that connect these phenomena and form the complex maintenance mechanism of anorexia nervosa in the participants. Comparing these results with the processes involved in defensive pessimism revealed similarities, suggesting the possible role of defensively pessimistic cognitive processes in maintaining anorexia nervosa among the participants of this study. The study thus offers a preliminary outline of the connection between the discussed analytical constructs and presents a new topic for research in the area of maintenance of anorexia nervosa.
