The Use of Short Video Clips in English Language Teaching

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the use of short video clips in English language teaching. The theoretical part provides the terminology needed for the thorough description of digital video clips and it also describes the generation of students which can encounter the use of short video clips in their language teaching lessons. The benefits and motivation concerning the use of short video clips in education are also outlined and explained. The main focus of the theoretical background is the description of individual language skills which are used in English language teaching with the emphasis on listening and reading. The primary aim of the research was to determine which type of video clip will the students of English consider the most enjoyable with the selected listening activity. According to the results and the consequent analysis, the types of video clips comedy sketch and animated TV show were found the most enjoyable with the selected listening activity. According to the results of the second aim of the research, determining the viewing habits of students, majority of them are fond of watching English videos in their free time. The thesis also includes implications for teaching, suggestions for further research and limitations of the research.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá využitím krátkých videoklipů ve výuce anglického jazyka. Její teoretická část je věnována důkladnému teoretickému popisu terminologie zabývající se digitálními videoklipy a popisuje generaci studentů, která se může setkávat s použitím videoklipů ve výuce jazyka. Jsou zde také vysvětleny výhody využití krátkých videoklipů ve výuce a také motivace, která je s jejich využitím spojená. Hlavní pozornost teoretické části je věnována rozebrání jednotlivých jazykových dovedností, které jsou používány při práci s videoklipy v hodinách jazyka, velký důraz je kladen zejména na poslech a čtení. Hlavním účelem praktické části bylo zjistit, který typ video klipu shledají studenti anglického jazyka nejvíce zábavným ve spojení s vybranou poslechovou aktivitou. Z výsledků výzkumu a následné analýzy je patrné, že typy video klipů komediální skeč a animovaný seriál byly s touto aktivitou vyhodnoceny jako nejvíce zábavné. Z druhé části výzkumu, zabývající se názory studentů ohledně sledování anglických videí vyplývá, že jejich sledování ve volném čase je mezi studenty velmi oblíbeno. Práce také zahrnuje rady pro učitele, náměty pro další výzkum a omezení výzkumu.
