Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce nazvané Hnutí Black Power jako alternativa k nenásilnému hnutí za občanská práva v USA je posoudit, zda hnutí Black Power, jež částečně postavilo svůj program na kritice předchozího pacifistického hnutí, dosáhlo výraznějších úspěchů než jeho předchůdce a lze jej tedy považovat za obecně úspěšnější. Počátek práce tvoří rekapitulace důležitých momentů afroamerické historie s důrazem na klíčové legislativní a jiné změny týkající se občanských práv. Následující části se věnují vzniku nenásilného hnutí za občanská práva, jeho nejdůležitějším kampaním a strategiím. Po zhodnocení úspěchů dosažených v období mezi polovinou 50. a 60. let 20. století, kdy hnutí za občanská práva používalo především nenásilné metody protestu, se práce zabývá vznikem hnutí Black Power, faktory, které vznik hnutí ovlivnily, a životními podmínkami amerických černochů v polovině 60. let 20. století. Práce pokračuje interpretací cílů tohoto hnutí v různých sférách života Afroameričanů, např. v politické sféře, atd. Následuje zhodnocení, zda tyto cíle byly skutečně dosaženy. Závěrem této práce je porovnání obou výše zmíněných hnutí včetně jejich strategií a kampaní a zhodnocení, zda je možné hnutí Black Power považovat za úspěšné, ne-li úspěšnější než hnutí předchozí.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis titled Black Power as an Alternative to the Non-violent Civil Rights Movement in the USA is to analyze if the reactive Black Power movement, which partly based its ideology and program on the criticism of the non-violent movement, could be considered more successful than its non-violent predecessor. The analysis is carried out on several examples of both the movements’ campaigns and activities that brought about certain achievements. The thesis starts with an overview of the most important milestones of the African American history up to 1950s with a particular focus on events and legal cases concerning civil rights. Consequently, the most memorable campaigns of the non-violent civil rights movement between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s are surveyed, the strategies of the non-violent movement are analyzed, and the most influential civil rights leaders are introduced. This is followed by the evaluation of the non-violent movement’s impact. The Black Power movement is the focus of the second half of the thesis. First, its creation is described, with a lot of attention paid to the factors influencing its birth and the living conditions of the African American population in the mid-1960s, which also contributed to the creation of the new movement. Then, the thesis deals with the ideologies, goals, and program of the Black Power movement first in theory, and consequently analyzes Black Power’s impact using practical examples such as the newly created political parties, etc. The findings of the comparative analysis of both the movements’ impact result in drawing of the conclusion and in the overall evaluation of the movements’ success.
