Rock mass strength evaluation for geomorphic purposes: Ondřejník Hill case study (Outer Western Carpathians)

Abstract:

Hodnoty pevnosti hornin přináší možnost charakterizovat horninový masiv a analyzovat geologického podloží. Zkoumanou oblastí je hřbet Ondřejníku, který je součástí Podbeskydské pahorkatiny Vnějších Západních Karpat. Svahy tohoto horninového masivu jsou často porušeny svahovými deformacemi. Zásadní vliv na deformaci a nestabilitu hornin má složení a uspořádání geologických vrstev, které způsobují rozsáhlé sesuvy, kde pevnost hornin hraje významnou roli. Hlavním cílem této práce je určit pevnost hornin, popis geomorfologické situace a srovnání metod pevností hornin v masivu Ondřejníku. Hodnocení pevnosti hornin je realizované metodou Selbyho a GSI. Nasbíraná a vyhodnocená data jsou následně statisticky zpracována. Dále je zpracována analýza, která se zaměřuje na rozložení geologických souvrství v rámci Ondřejníku. Za pomocí digitálního modelu reliéfu o vysokém rozlišení (DMR 4G) a následného zpracování v programu ArcMap se vygenerovala potřebná data sklonu svahu. Provedeným výzkumem se zjistilo, že i když je pevnost horninového masivu v daných vrstvách rozdílná, tak sklony svahu jsou v relativně podobném rozsahu. Ze zpracování hodnot pevností metodou Selbyho a GSI je tedy zřejmé, že sklon svahu není ovlivněný danou pevností hornin. Z výsledků obou metod vyplývá, že Selbyho metoda a GSI vzájemně silně korelují. Vznik a rozložení svahových deformací jsou ovlivněny geologickým uspořádáním vrstev. Uspořádání a sled vrstev s kontrastní pevností je jeden z významných faktorů vývoje svahových deformací.

Abstract:

Rock mass strength values provide an opportunity to characterize the rock massif and analyse the geological subsurface. The area of research is the ridge of Ondřejník, which is part of the Podbeskydská upland of the Outer West Carpathians. Slopes of this rock massif are often breached by slope deformations. Composition and order of the geological layers has crucial impact on the deformation and instability of rocks, causing vast slides. Here the strength of rocks is an important role. The main aim of the thesis is to establish strength of rocks, describe geomorphological situations and compare strength methods in the Ondřejník massif. The rock strength assessment is done using the Selby and GSI methods. The collected and evaluated data is then statistically processed. Furthermore an analysis is compiled, focusing on the distribution of strata within Ondřejník. Using a high-resolution relief digital model (DMR 4G) and subsequent processing via ArcMap software the necessary slope inclination data has been generated. Carrying out this research showed that even though the rock massif strength differs in given layers, the inclination of slope remains in a relatively similar range. Processing the strength values using the Selby and GSI methods, it is then obvious the inclination of a slope is not affected by the given rock strength. It stems from the Selby and GSI method results that both of these methods are in a strong correlation. The creation and distribution of slope deformations are influenced by the geological order of strata. Order and succession of layers with contrasting strength is one of the influential factors of slope deformation development.
