Internet memes as reservoirs of meaning: Interpreting the Doomer

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá Internetovými memy a zejména jedním konkrétním – Doomerem. Kladu si dvojí cíl. Zaprvé, zodpovědět otázku, co nám mem může sdělit o těch, kteří jej sdílejí. K memu přistupuji z pozice kulturní sociologie a interpretuji ho za použití metody ikonologie. Mým závěrem je, že to, co mem vyjadřuje, pramení ze zakoušené sociální anomie a odcizení. Zadruhé, pokouším se dosáhnout teoretického porozumění memům a následně jej ilustrovat na rozličných příkladech Doomera. Za tímto účelem je prozkoumáno existující studium Internetových memů a rozšířeno o vybrané poststrukturalistické koncepty. Internetové memy jsou brány jako sociální imaginária – neustále se zvětšující rezervoáry významu bez pevných hranic. Konkrétní případy memu, které vycházejí z tohoto rezervoáru, dohromady tvoří rhizomatický soubor, jenž pojí pouze druhové podobnosti. Toto porozumění je podloženo ikonografickým stopování Doomera. Zde utvářím částečnou mapu jeho mnoha verzí a snažím se načrtnout jejich různé významy. Cílem je podpořit teoretická tvrzení empiricky.

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with Internet memes and especially with one particular – the Doomer. My aims are twofold. Firstly, to answer the question of what it can tell us about those who share it. The meme is approached from a cultural sociological position and interpreted using a method of iconology. My conclusion is that what the meme expresses stems from experienced social anomie and alienation. Secondly, I aim to develop a theoretical understanding of memes and illustrate it with various examples of the Doomer meme. For this purpose, the existing Internet memes scholarship is examined and expanded with selected concepts from poststructuralism. Internet memes are posed as social imaginaries – ever-growing reservoirs of meaning without solid boundaries. The instances of a meme, taken from the reservoir, compose a rhizomatic set only connected by family resemblances. This understanding is substantiated by an iconographic tracking of the Doomer, where I develop a partial map of its many versions and sketch its various meanings supporting the theoretical claims empirically.
