Cinematography in contemporary documentary film

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá kamerovým snímáním dokumentů v současnosti, kdy se stírají rozdíly mezi dokumentárním a hraným filmem a vyvolává otázku, zda má pojem „dokumentární kamera“ dnes ještě smysl. Zabývá se také technologickou částí a s ní vývojem rozmanitých kinematografických forem a trendů v rámci historie dokumentárního filmu. Na vybraných příkladech popisuje různé formální principy, kde je tenká hranice mezi fikčnímy a nonfikčnímy filmy a ukazuje, jak se tyto světy vzájemně propojují a inspirují. Jsou zde uvedeny současné technologické nástroje a s nimi i osobní zkušenosti autora se snímáním dokumentárních filmů. Analyzují se zde také myšlenkové procesy, kdy je kladen důraz na intuici a vyzdvihuje se působení dokumentární zkušenosti na osobní rozvoj kameramana. Práce končí nastíněním budoucnosti natáčení dokumentárních filmů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on shooting of contemporary documentary films where the difference between documentary and fiction film is blurred. It raises question if the name "documentary cinematography style" still makes sense. It also analyzes technological point of view and developmenf of diverse cinematography forms and trends along the history of documentary film. Variants of approaches are described on selected examples with subtle border between fiction and nonfiction film and one of the goals of the thesis was to show how these worlds are connected and inspired by each other. Contemporary technological equipment is being presented as well as author´s personal experience with shooting documentary movies. The author introduces the discussion on thought processes with the focus on intuition and highlights the effect of documentary experience on personal development of a cinematographer. The thesis finalizes with the outline of the future of documentary film shooting.
