Friends-and-neighbours Effect at Selected Senatorial Districts

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá působení sousedského efektu ve vybraných moravských senátních obvodech, které mají podobnou sídelní strukturu. Postupně analyzuje všechny senátní volby 1996-2014, popisuje projevy efektu a následně obvody komparuje ve snaze najít podobnosti či odlišnosti. V dalších částech se zabývá vztahem mezi sousedským efektem a stranickou příslušností a jeho působením při opakované kandidatuře nebo postupu do druhého kola. Výzkum ukázal, že z obecného hlediska se efekt sice projevuje podobně (efekt nejvíc ovlivňuje kandidáty ze středních obcí, nejméně z okresních měst), ovšem na individuální úrovni dochází k rozdílným projevům (hlavně v intenzitě nárůstů a poklesů). Je tedy téměř nemožné předpovědět, jak se efekt v dalších volbách projeví. Komparace obvodů ukázala výraznější podobnosti pouze mezi okresními městy, kde dochází jen k mírnému působení. Také jsme zjistili, že v druhém kole se efekt většinou projeví podobně jako v prvním a s drobnými změnami to platí i pro opakovanou kandidaturu. Výzkum jednotlivých stran ukázal, že klíčová je osobnost kandidáta a nikoli stranická příslušnost – jedinou výjimkou je ODS, u jejichž kandidátů efekt působil velmi podobně.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis examines the friends-and-neighbours effect in selected Moravian senate districts with similar residential structure. It analyses all senate elections from 1996 to 2014 and describes how the effect works at them. Later it compares the districts in order to find out similarities/differences. In the next parts the thesis examines the relation between the friends-and-neighbours effect and the party affiliation and its effects during the repeated candidature and during advance to the second round of elections. The research came to conclusion that while the effect works similarly from the general point of view (candidates from the smallest cities are the most affected while candidates from the biggest city in the district are the least affected), it is different at the individual level (mainly from the point of intensity). It is thus nearly impossible to predict how the friends-and-neighbours effect is going to work during the next elections. The comparison of districts discovered that the stronger similarity exists only between the district cities where the effect works just slightly. The thesis also came to conclusion that during the second round of elections the effect works very similarly in comparison with the first round and this also applies to the repeated candidature. While examining the political parties, the thesis discovered that the key factor for the friends-and-neighbours effect is the candidate and not the party affiliation (with the exception of ODS).
