Body Image and Social Media Among Adolescents

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo prozkoumat vztah mezi používáním sociálních sítí a sebepojetím těla se zaměřením na sebeprezentaci, srovnávání a potenciální dopady na duševní zdraví u uživatelů. Motivací k této studii byl nedostatek odborných publikací zkoumajících tento vztah v rámci české populace. K identifikaci potenciálních souvislostí mezi sebepojetím těla, srovnáváním tělesného vzhledu a používáním sociálních médií u českých adolescentů byla použita korelační analýza. V teoretické části byl diskutován tělesný obraz a jeho rizikové modifikace, dále fenomén sociálních sítí ve vztahu k well-beingu uživatelů a rizika spojená s užíváním sociálních sítí ve vztahu k tělesnému obrazu. Dále bylo zkoumáno sociální srovnávání na sociálních sítích a možné ochranné faktory související s body image. Ve výzkumné části byly použity čtyři dotazníky, které zkoumaly a popisovaly vybrané aspekty mezi používáním sociálních sítí a veřejným srovnáváním, body image, sebepřijetím a spokojeností se vzhledem uživatelů. Jedná se konkrétně o Dotazník sebepřijetí a kompetentnosti (SLCS-R), Basic Olomouc Body Rating škálu (BOBR), Srovnávací škála fyzického vzhledu (PACS) a Bergenská škála závislosti na sociálních médiích. Výsledky ukázaly slabé, ale statisticky významné vztahy mezi těmito fenomény. Sběr dat byl zprostředkován pomocí sociálních sítí. Výzkumný soubor reprezentovalo 212 respondentů, z toho 148 žen a 64 mužů, s věkovým průměrem 20,8 let. Výsledky jsou prezentovány ve výzkumné části bakalářské práce.

Abstract:

The aim of this undergraduate thesis was to explore the relationship between social networking site use and body self-concept, focusing on self-presentation, comparison and potential mental health implications for female users. The motivation for this study was the lack of scholarly publications examining this relationship within the Czech population. Correlational analysis was used to identify potential associations between body selfconcept, body image comparison and social media use in Czech adolescents. In the theoretical part, body image and its risk modifications were discussed, as well as the phenomenon of social media in relation to users' well-being and the risks associated with the use of social media in relation to body image. Furthermore, social comparison and self-presentation on social networks and possible protective factors related to body image were examined. In the research part, four questionnaires were used to explore and describe selected aspects between social networking use and users' public comparison, body image, selfacceptance and appearance satisfaction. These are specifically the Self-acceptance and Competence Questionnaire - Revised version (SLCS-R), the Basic Olomouc Body Rating Scale (BOBR), the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale (PACS) and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. The results showed weak but statistically significant relationships between these phenomena. Data collection was mediated by social media. The research population represented 212 respondents, 148 females and 64 males, with a mean age of 20.8 years. The results are presented in the research part of the bachelor thesis.
