Frequency of unique items in translation from English into Czech

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce je hypotéza o jedinečných jednotkách (unique items hypothesis), kterou předložila Tirkkonen-Conditová jako možnou překladovou univerzálii a podle které se prvky, jež má cílový jazyk oproti zdrojovému navíc, vyskytují v překladech s nižší frekvencí než v nepřekladech. Cílem práce je hypotézu prozkoumat teoreticky z různých úhlů a otestovat ji na překladech z angličtiny do češtiny. Jedinečné jednotky jsou prý v překladech podužívány proto, že výchozí postup překladatelů je překlad doslovný. Zároveň by mohlo jít o zvláštní druh interference a vysvětlení lze navíc nalézt v absenci spojení v překladatelově dvoujazyčné mentální síti vzájemně souvisejích významů. Pojem jedinečné jednotky je nicméně příliš vágní a nese s sebou problémy týkající se srovnatelnosti dvou jazykových systémů. K otestování hypotézy bylo za pomoci různých gramatik a slovníků vybráno 64 jedinečných jednotek. Rozdíly jejich výskytu v českém a v anglickém beletrickém subkorpusu (po 17 milionech tokenech), které jsou součástí korpusu Jerome, byly podrobeny testu statistické signifikance a věcná významnost byla stanovena pomocí míry DIN. Výsledky potvrdily podužívání u více než 81 % zvolených jedinečných jednotek. Přestože podužívání nebylo nijak výrazné, bylo statisticky signifikantní a hypotéza se tak potvrdila. Zároveň bylo předvedeno, jakou širokou škálu jedinečných jednotek z různých úrovní jazykové analýzy lze v jednom jazyce nalézt a že jedinečnost není jedinou příčinou jejich podužívání. Důvod proč se jedinečnými jednotkami zabývat nespočívá jen v lepším porozumění tomu, čím se překlad vyznačuje, nýbrž mají význam i pro výcvik překladatelů a jakost překladu. Povědomí o nich a schopnost je vhodně použít se může osvědčit v případech, kdy je cílem zhotovit text, jejž nelze rozeznat od nepřekladů.

Abstract:

The subject of the thesis is Tirkkonen-Condit’s unique items hypothesis, a proposed (universal) feature of translation according to which translations contain lower frequencies of target-language-specific linguistic items than non-translations. The object is to examine the unique items hypothesis from various angles in theory and test it on translations from English into Czech. Unique items are thought to be underrepresented in translations because the default translators’ way of proceeding is, presumably, literal. It could also be a special kind of interference, and it may be caused by missing links in a bilingual’s mental network of related meanings. The notion of a unique item, however, is too vague and fraught with problems related to comparability between two language systems. The selection of the 64 unique items for testing the hypothesis was done with the help of various grammars and dictionaries. The differences in their frequencies in a Czech and an English fiction subcorpora (17 million tokens each) of the Jerome Corpus were submitted to a test of statistical significance, and the Difference Index was used to assess the effect sizes. Of the unique items selected, over 81% were underrepresented in the subcorpus of translations. Although the underrepresentation was not very pronounced, it was statistically significant, and the hypothesis was borne out. It was shown that there can be a wide variety of unique items pertaining to different ranks and different levels of language, and that ‘uniqueness’ is not the only factor responsible for their underrepresentation. The purpose of learning about unique items is not only to better understand the nature of translation, it is useful also with regard to translator training and translation quality. Being aware of them and knowing when to use them could be a good thing if one’s goal is to produce a text unrecognizable from non-translations.
