The contiguity between mathematics and music and their use in the teaching of music education at the 2nd grade of elementary school

Abstract:

Diplomová si klade za cíl analyzovat a prozkoumat hluboké souvislosti mezi matematikou a hudbou a zjistit, jak lze těchto vztahů efektivně využít ve výuce hudební výchovy na druhém stupni základní školy. Práce nejprve popisuje historický vývoj vztahu mezi oběma disciplínami, od Pythagora a antických filosofů, přes Galilea, Mersenna a Eulera, až po moderní skladatele a vědce 20. století, kteří ve svém díle aplikovali matematické principy, jako jsou symetrie či fraktály. Následně se zaměřuje na základní matematické koncepty přítomné v hudbě, jako jsou rytmus, poměry, intervaly, frekvence tónů, geometrické transformace, modulární aritmetika a matematické modelování zvuku. V pedagogické části práce jsou podrobně popsány všeobecné přínosy interdisciplinárního přístupu, včetně rozvoje kreativity, zlepšení postojů a výsledků v matematice, podpory konceptuálního porozumění a snížení matematické úzkosti. Součástí práce je také výzkumné šetření formou dotazníku mezi učiteli druhého stupně základních škol, jehož cílem bylo zmapovat jejich dosavadní zkušenosti, názory a ochotu využívat matematicko-hudební souvislosti ve své praxi. Na základě získaných dat jsou v závěru práce navrženy konkrétní didaktické aktivity a materiály (např. rytmus s LEGO kostkami, hudební sudoku, musicogramy), které mohou sloužit jako inspirace pro pedagogy. Práce tak nabízí nové pohledy na výuku a přispívá k hlubšímu porozumění interdisciplinaritě mezi matematikou a hudbou.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to analyse and explore the deep connections between mathematics and music and to find out how these relationships can be effectively used in the teaching of music education at the second level of primary school. The thesis first describes the historical development of the relationship between the two disciplines, from Pythagoras and the ancient philosophers, through Galileo, Mersenne and Euler, to modern composers and scientists of the 20th century who have applied mathematical principles such as symmetries and fractals in their work. He then focuses on the basic mathematical concepts present in music, such as rhythm, ratios, intervals, note frequencies, geometric transformations, modular arithmetic, and mathematical modeling of sound. The pedagogical section of the paper details the general benefits of an interdisciplinary approach, including developing creativity, improving attitudes and performance in mathematics, promoting conceptual understanding, and reducing mathematical anxiety. The thesis also includes a research survey in the form of a questionnaire amongst second cycle primary school teachers to map their current experiences, views and willingness to use mathematics-music contexts in their practice. Based on the data obtained, the thesis concludes by proposing specific didactic activities and materials (e.g. rhythm with LEGO bricks, music sudoku, musicograms) that can serve as inspiration for teachers. The work thus offers new perspectives on teaching and contributes to a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinarity between mathematics and music.
