Perception of Romaness in the Czech Scolarly Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá „percepcí romství v české odborné literatuře“, tzn. pomocí jakých termínů je romská populace v odborných publikacích u nás (v České republice) uchopována, jaké termíny autoři používají, když píší o Romech a jaké rozpory toto používání může přinášet. Termíny rozebírané v této práci pochází z vybraných publikací, které zasahují do sociální, etnicko-kulturní i právní roviny, jsou to publikace běžně dostupné, určené pro odborníky i širokou veřejnost. Cílem práce je nalézt základní a často se v publikacích opakující koncepty. Tyto koncepty a jejich použití popsat a zjistit, zda používání těchto konceptů v sobě obsahuje kontrasty- rozpory. Základními zkoumanými termíny jsou „romská etnicita“, „romská komunita“, „romská identita“, „romská národnostní menšina“ a „sociálně vyloučená skupina“. Z jednotlivých popisů těchto termínů vyplývá, že termíny nejsou často přesně vymezeny, definovány, u různých autorů se mohou jejich významy překrývat- např. pokud autoři hovoří o etnické menšině a etnické identitě. Zároveň některé používané koncepty mohou mít u některých autorů hodnotící charakter- jsou používána adjektiva „pozitivní“ negativní“. Absence konceptualizace může vést k rozporům, které se objevují v používání těchto termínů. Hlavním zjištěným kontrastem je směšování pohledů jednotících, které romskou populaci chápou jako jeden celek mající určité společné charakteristiky (hlavní charakteristikou je „romipen“), a naopak pohledů různorodosti, které zdůrazňují odlišnosti a heterogennost Romů, jejich stratifikaci. Příkladem může být používání pojmu „romská komunita“.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the “perception of the Romaness in Czech scholarly literature“, meaning with which terms Czech scholarly literature refers to the Romaness, which terms different authors use while writing about the Romanies and the contradictions this can result in. The terms which are ruminated in this thesis are from selected publications which are involved in social, ethnical – cultural and legal perspectives. All the publications are commonly available, and directed at both specialists and the general public. The aim of this thesis is to find the basic and often repeated concepts, to describe these concepts and find out if their usage includes any kind of contradiction. The basic investigated terms are “the Romany ethnicity”, “Romany community”, “Romany identity”, “Romany minority” and “the socially-excluded group”. From the single descriptions of these terms it is clear that the terms are not always well defined, different authors defining them in different ways, and the terms can also overlap in usage by different authors – for example if the authors talk about the ethnic minority and the ethnic identity. Some of the concepts can even be given an evaluative character by different authors – the adjectives positive and negative are commonly used. The absence of conceptualism can lead to some contradictions appearing in the usage of these terms. The main contrast found was mingling of unifying sights on one hand and the sights of diversity on the other. The unifying sights see the Romany population as one whole which has some features in common (the main feature is „romipen“). The sights of diversity stress the dissimilarity and the heterogeneity of the Roma and their stratification. An example for such a mingling of sights can be the usage of the term “the Romany community“.
