Analysis of regional unemployment using spatial data

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na analýzu vlivu vybraných socio-ekonomických faktorů na neza- městnanost v zemích Visegrádské čtyřky v roce 2016 pomocí modelů prostorové ekonometrie a dalších testů prostorové závislosti. Prostřednictvím Moran’s I a Geary’s C testů byla po- tvrzena prostorová závislost nezaměstnanosti v daných regionech, pro regresní analýzu byly sestaveny modely Spatial lag model, Spatial Durbin model a Spatial error model. Podle hod- not Akaikeho informačního kritéria byl zvolen nejkvalitnější model a následně vhodná matice prostorových vah. Potvrdilo se se, že volba matice vah skutečně ovlivňuje výsledky regrese. Na základě výsledků modelů lze předpokládat, že míru nezaměstnanosti kladně ovlivňují faktory jako dlouhodobá nezaměstnanost a podíl obyvatel s primárním vzděláním, naopak záporně podíl zaměstnaných v high-tech sektoru nebo HDP.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the analysis of the impact of selected socio-economic factors on unemployment in the Visegrád Four countries during 2016 using models of spatial econo- metrics and other tests of spatial dependence. The spatial dependence of unemployment in the given regions was confirmed by using Moran’s I and Geary’s C tests. For regression analysis, the Spatial lag model, Spatial Durbin model and Spatial error model were applied. According to the values of Akaike information criterion, the highest quality model and then a suitable spatial weights matrix were chosen. It has been confirmed that the choice of the weight matrix actually affects the regression results. Based on the results of the models it can be assumed that the unemployment rate is positively influenced by factors such as long-term unemployment and the percentage of the population with primary education. On the other hand, the percentage of those employed in the high-tech sector or GDP is influenced the unemployment rate negatively.
