Russo-Georgian War in 2008: Conflict Analysis and the New Era of Confrontation

Abstract:

The dissertation is dedicated to the research of the Russian-Georgian armed conflict of August 2008 in three distinctive research dimensions - typological, regional and systemic. The text is also internally divided into three large units: theoretical, presenting essential theoretical fundaments, interpretive frameworks, and primary research questions; a contextual unit, devoted to a detailed description of the historical causes and course of the investigated armed conflict in all three established research dimensions, and the final, analytical-interpretive unit, which captures the critical typological characteristics of the researched armed conflict, while simultaneously identifies, analyses and interprets its implications within the regional and systemic dimensions of the research. The author applies a rich repertoire of methods, theories and interpretive frameworks, starting with the so-called conflict mapping to characterize and categorize the researched armed conflict. The sectoral approach of the Copenhagen School of Security Studies is later applied to identify its essential implications. The theories of regional security complexes and offensive realism are finally used to analyse and interpret these implications within the regional and systemic dimensions of research.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca je venovaná výskumu rusko-gruzínskeho ozbrojeného konfliktu z augusta 2008 v troch dimenziách výskumu - typologickej, regionálnej a systémovej. Text je takisto vnútorne členený na tri veľké celky: teoretický, predstavujúci základné teoretické východiská, interpretačné rámce a hlavné výskumné otázky, kontextuálny celok, venujúci sa detailnej deskripcii historických príčin a priebehu skúmaného ozbrojeného konfliktu vo všetkých troch stanovených výskumných dimenziách a záverečný, analyticko-interpretačný celok, ktorý zachytáva kľúčové typologické charakteristiky skúmaného ozbrojeného konfliktu, zároveň identifikuje, analyzuje a interpretuje jeho dopady v rámci regionálnej a systémovej dimenzie výskumu. Autor využíva bohatý repertoár metód, teórií a interpretačných rámcov od tzv. mapy konfliktu slúžiacej na účely charakterizácie a kategorizácie skúmaného konfliktu cez sektorový prístup Kodanskej školy bezpečnostných štúdií slúžiaci na identifikáciu jeho kľúčových dopadov, až po teórie regionálnych bezpečnostných komplexov a ofenzívneho realizmu, ktoré tieto dopady analyzujú a interpretujú v rámci regionálnej, resp. systémovej dimenzie výskumu.
