Social Capital in Family Firms

Abstract:

Sociální kapitál představuje pro firmy vzácné aktivum. Jeho významnost v rodinných firmách je ještě vyšší, jelikož je silnější, dlouhodobější a hůře napodobitelný nerodinnými podniky. Hlavním cílem je zjistit, jaké faktory ovlivňují vznik sociálního kapitálu v rodinných firmách, jak na sebe jednotlivé formy sociálního kapitálu působí, jaké má sociální kapitál efekty na inovační a ekonomickou výkonnost rodinné firmy, a to při zohlednění heterogenity rodinných firem. Provedená rešerše literatury naznačuje, že existující teorie je velmi fragmentovaná, chybí jednoznačné vymezení pojmů, stejně tak jako longitudinální studie objasňující dynamiku sociálního kapitálu. Většina existujících studií se zabývá efekty sociálního kapitálu. Praktickou část práce představují dva empirické modely. Pro popis dat využito deskriptivní statistiky a Pearsonovy korelační analýzy. Pro testování hypotéz byl použito regresní analýzy, nástroje PROCESS pro SPSS, a strukturního modelování (SEM) v IBM SPSS Amos. První empirický model je zaměřený na roli sociálního kapitálu v souvislosti se socioemocionálním bohatstvím a inovacemi. Na datovém souboru 198 rodinných firem působících v USA byly zjištěny následující poznatky. Socioemocionální bohatství je pozitivně asociováno s interním sociálním kapitálem, který dále pozitivně působí na externí sociální kapitál, internalizaci znalostí, avšak negativně ovlivňuje inovace. Inovační výstup je také pozitivně ovlivňován externím sociálním kapitálem i internalizací znalostí. Druhý empirický model se zaměřil na sociální kapitál v souvislosti s organizační kulturou a výkonností rodinné firmy. Výsledky naznačují, že skupinová vs. individuální orientace pozitivně ovlivňuje interní sociální kapitál, a externí vs. interní orientace pozitivně ovlivňuje externí sociální kapitál. Existuje také pozitivní vztah mezi interním a externím sociálním kapitálem. Zatímco externí sociální kapitál podporuje výkonnost rodinné firmy, interní sociální kapitál působí na výkonnost negativně. Kromě syntézy stávajícího stavu literatury a nalezení nových empirických vztahů je hlavním přínosem také navržení chybějící definice rodinného sociálního kapitálu.

Abstract:

Social capital may present a valuable asset for companies. Moreover, its relevance in context of family businesses is even higher, as social capital is stronger, durable, and hard to imitate by non-family firms. The main goal is to identify the antecedents and outcomes of social capital in family firms, to identify the interactions between individual components of social capital, and to identify the role of social capital in relationship with the innovative and economic performance of family firms, as well as to capture the heterogeneity of family firms. Systematic literature review indicated that the existing theory is fragmented, and clear categorization and longitudinal studies are missing. Most of the published studies investigate the outcomes of social capital. The analytical part consists of two empirical models. For data description, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were used. Hypotheses were tested using the tool PROCESS for SPSS, as well as structural equation modelling (SEM) in IBM SPSS AMOS. First empirical model investigates the role of social capital in socioemotional wealth-innovation relationship. On the dataset of 198 family firms from USA were confirmed following hypotheses. Socioemotional wealth positively affects bonding social capital, which further supports bridging social capital, knowledge internalization, but negatively affects innovation. Innovation is positively influenced by bridging social capital and knowledge internalization. Second empirical model investigated social capital in relation to organizational culture and performance of family firms. The analysis indicated that group vs. individual orientation positively affects bonding social capital, and external vs. internal orientation positively affects bridging social capital. Positive relationship between bonding and bridging social capital was also confirmed. While the bridging social capital supports performance, bonding social capital may have detrimental effect. The main contribution besides the synthesis of the current state of literature, and confirming suggested hypotheses, also presents the proposition of missing definition of family social capital.
