AI-Co-Created Music from an Adornian–Benjaminian Perspective; A Contribution to the Discussion on Music in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Anotace:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na estetickou analýzu vybraných současných hudebních skladeb spoluvytvořených pomocí nástrojů umělé inteligence. Cílem práce je interpretovat tyto příklady prostřednictvím estetických konceptů Theodora W. Adorna a Waltera Benjamina. Teoretická část práce představí vybrané aspekty Adornovy hudební estetiky, zejména koncept standardizace a kritiku kulturního průmyslu, a Benjaminovu teorii technické reprodukovatelnosti umění. Východiska Adornovy a Benjaminovy estetiky vymezí interpretační perspektivu, prostřednictvím níž budou analyzovány konkrétní hudební příklady. Empirická část práce spočívá v analýze několika současných skladeb vytvořených s využitím generativních AI nástrojů. Analýza bude strukturována pomocí schématu autor–dílo–recipient a vedena perspektivami zmíněných autorů. Práce si klade za cíl přispět k diskusi o estetické povaze a recepci hudby spoluvytvořené umělou inteligencí a ukázat, jak mohou klasické estetické teorie sloužit jako interpretační nástroje pro analýzu současných technologicky zprostředkovaných forem hudební tvorby.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis focuses on an aesthetic analysis of selected contemporary musical works co-created using artificial intelligence tools. The aim of the thesis is to interpret these examples through the aesthetic concepts of Theodor W. Adorno and Walter Benjamin. The theoretical part introduces selected aspects of Adorno’s musical aesthetics, in particular the concept of standardization and the critique of the culture industry, as well as Benjamin’s theory of the technical reproducibility of art. The theoretical premises of Adorno’s and Benjamin’s aesthetics establish the interpretative perspective through which the musical examples will be analysed.The empirical part consists of an analysis of selected contemporary compositions created using generative AI tools. The analysis will be structured according to the author–work–recipient scheme and guided by the perspectives of the aforementioned authors. The thesis aims to contribute to the discussion on the aesthetic nature and reception of music co-created with artificial intelligence and to demonstrate how classical aesthetic theories can serve as interpretative tools for analysing contemporary technologically mediated forms of musical creation.
