Mathematical skills of pupils in the teaching of geography in an example of map scale work

Abstract:

Cílem práce je identifikovat úroveň matematických dovedností žáků pro úspěšnou práci s měřítkem. Pro testování byl využit didaktický test vytvořený autorem práce. Test byl rozdělen podle zaměření typů otázek v rámci předmětu i Bloomovy taxonomie kognitivních cílů. Testování proběhlo na vybraných základních školách v 6. a 7.ročníku. Zapojilo se do něj 287 žáků. Byla zjišťována závislost mezi pohlavím, navštěvovaným ročníkem, hodnocením z matematiky a zeměpisu a úspěšností v celém testu, včetně jednotlivých otázek. Došlo také k vyhodnocení závislosti mezi subjektivním hodnocením náročnosti úlohy a úspěšností jejího řešení. V rámci didaktického testu bylo zjištěno, že žáci s přibývajícími dovednostmi v matematice dosahují lepších výsledků při práci s měřítkem mapy. Stejně tak v případě dovedností v rámci geografie, ale již v menším měřítku. Úlohy, kde se pracuje s mapou mají poloviční úspěšnost oproti úlohám, kde s mapou žáci nepracují. Především ženy navštěvující 6. ročník vykazovaly znatelně lepší výsledky ve srovnání s muži, zatímco v 7. ročníku rozdíl z hlediska pohlaví nebyl. Byla zjištěna závislost mezi známkou z matematiky a úspěšností v testu, zatímco v zeměpisu jsme podobnou závislost nezjistili. Úspěšnost řešení u většiny úloh nezávisela na subjektivním hodnocení náročnosti úlohy. Úspěšnost v testu poukazovala na velmi slabou práci s grafickým měřítkem mapy.

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to identify the level of students' mathematical skills for successful work with a scale. A didactic test created by the author of the thesis was used for testing. The test was divided according to the focus of question types within the subject and Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive objectives. Testing took place in selected primary schools in the 6th and 7th grades, involving 287 students. The study examined the dependence on gender, grade level, grades in mathematics and geography, and success in the overall test, including individual questions. There was also an evaluation of the correlation between the subjective assessment of task difficulty and the success of its solution. Within the didactic test, it was found that students with increasing mathematical skills achieve better results when working with the scale of a map. Similarly, in the case of geography skills, but to a lesser extent. Tasks involving map work had a success rate half compared to tasks where students did not work with a map. Especially, female students in the 6th grade exhibited significantly better results compared to males, while in the 7th grade, there was no gender difference. A correlation was found between the grade in mathematics and success in the test, while a similar correlation was not found in geography. The success of solving most tasks did not depend on the subjective assessment of task difficulty. The test's success indicated a very weak proficiency in working with the graphical scale of a map.
