The Standing of the Catholic Church in Communist Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zjistit, jaké měla Římskokatolická církev postavení v komunistickém Československu. Odpověď na tuto hlavní otázku se budu snažit najít pomocí jednotlivých podotázek, které by mě měly přivést k cíli. První kapitola této bakalářské práce se zaměřuje na rozbor prací a myšlenek duchovních otců komunismu Karla Marxe, Friedricha Engelse a Vladimíra Iljiče Lenina. Druhá kapitola nabídne malý exkurz do historie Římskokatolické církve v oblasti Českých zemí, protože postavení Římskokatolické církve se na tomto území vyvíjelo poměrně dramaticky už od 15. století. Důležitá byla například vlna rekatolizace nebo období tzv. První republiky. Třetí kapitola této práce se bude zabývat například problematikou toho, jak Československo implementovalo proticírkevní zákony do svého právního řádu, co tyto zákony pro církev znamenaly apod. Další část bude věnována tomu, jakým způsobem stát postupoval proti lidem, kteří byli s církví bezprostředně spjati - biskupům, řeholníkům, řeholnicím a kněžím atd. Předposlední část by měla dát nahlédnout do vztahu státu a věřících, respektive by měla ukázat to, jak komunistický režim v jednotlivých obdobích přistupoval k perzekuci věřících občanů. Poslední část práce se týká Československé strany lidové, která měla v Československu poměrně dlouhou tradici a v době vlády komunistů víceméně ztratila charakter strany. Stala se z ní spíše jakási "zájmová organizace" sdružující věřící, jejímž úkolem bylo provádět politiku komunistické strany.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find out what was the standing of the Roman Catholic Church in communist Czechoslovakia. I will try to find the answer to this major question by individual subquestions, which should bring me to my aim. The first chapter of this thesis focuses on the analysis of the works and ideas of the founding fathers of communism Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. The second chapter offers little excursion into the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the Czech Lands because the standing of the Roman Catholic Church in this area was evolving quite dramatically since the 15th century. An important example was the wave of recatholisation or period of so called First Republic. The third chapter of this thesis will address issues such as how Czechoslovakia implemented anti-Church laws into its legislation, what these laws meant for the church, etc. Another part will be devoted to the way the State proceeded against people who were closely connected with the church - bishops, friars and nuns, priests and so on. The last but one part should give insight into the relationship between the state and the faithful, or rather should show how the communist regime in each period approached persecution of the religious citizens. The last part refers to the Czechoslovak People's Party, which had in Czechoslovakia fairly long tradition and during communist rule more or less lost the character of the party. It has become a rather sort of "interest organizations" uniting the faithful, whose task was to carry out the policy of the Communist Party.
