An Analysis of Phonetic and Phonological Interferences from Spanish in the English of Native Spanish Speakers

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a contrastive study of Spanish and English phonological systems. The thesis has two parts: a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part concentrates on a comparison of Spanish and English vowels, diphthongs, triphthongs, and consonants. There is also a chapter about the stress. The theoretical part puts emphasis on the elements of English phonemic system whose equivalents do not exist in Spanish, and for this reason, they could cause problems for native speakers of Spanish. The practical part presents an analysis of a corpus which consists of recordings of interviews and reading in English of twenty native Spanish speakers. This analysis offers a register of specific mistakes which the participants made and the percentage of appearance of these mistakes. The duration of studying the English language and a stay in English-speaking countries are taken into consideration. The aim of the thesis is to offer to native Spanish speakers a complete summary of the elements of English pronunciation which could be difficult for them and help them improve their pronunciation of English this way.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá kontrastivní studií španělského a anglického fonologického systému. Práce má dvě části – teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na srovnání španělských a anglických samohlásek, dvojhlásek, trojhlásek a souhlásek. Také je zde zařazena kapitola o přízvuku. Teoretická část klade důraz na elementy fonematického systému angličtiny, jejichž ekvivalenty neexistují ve španělštině, a z toho důvodu by mohly být obtížné pro rodilé mluvčí španělštiny. Praktická část představuje analýzu korpusu, který je tvořen nahrávkami rozhovorů a četby v angličtině dvaceti rodilých mluvčích španělštiny. Tato analýza nabízí výčet konkrétních chyb, kterých se respondenti dopustili, a procentuální zastoupení těchto chyb. V úvahu jsou brány faktory délky studia angličtiny a pobytu v zemích, kde se mluví anglicky. Cílem práce je nabídnout rodilým mluvčím španělštiny ucelený přehled jevů v anglické výslovnosti, které by pro ně mohly být obtížné, a tímto způsobem jim pomoci zlepšit jejich výslovnost angličtiny.
