Operation of blockchain technology in the financial sector

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje tématu provozu technologie blockchain ve finančním sektoru. Práce se nejprve zaměřuje na popis základních pojmů jako je definování pojmu blockchain, kryptografie, peer-to-peer síť či chytré kontrakty. Následně je popsána historie této technologie zahrnující její vývoj v minulé dekádě a posléze nastíněn možný budoucí rozvoj. V další části je rozebrána problematika databázových systémů, diferenciace oproti kryptoměnám či algoritmy blockchainu. Hlavní částí práce je poté popsání možného uplatnění blockchainu ve finančním sektoru, kde jsou popsány jednotlivé případy užití, provoz bankovních systémů či ochrana digitální identity v bankovních systémech a blockchain technologie. Hlavním cílem práce je provedení analýzy využití technologie blockchain ve finančním sektoru pomocí kombinace kvalitativního a kvantitativního výzkumu. V rámci kvalitativního průzkumu je uplatněna metoda polostrukturovaného rozhovoru a kvantitativní průzkum je realizován pomocí dotazníkového šetření. Výsledkem průzkumů bylo zjištění, že se blockchain v bankovních institucích působících v České republice v hojném počtu nevyužívá, a tak byla nalezena pouze jedna platforma využívající prvky blockchainu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of blockchain technology operation in the financial sector. In the first place, thesis is focusing on the description of basic concepts such as defining the term blockchain, cryptography, peer-to-peer network or smart contracts. Subsequently, the history of this technology is described, including its evolution in the last decade, and then a possible future development is outlined. As a next step, a possible future development is outlined. The next part deals with the issues of database systems, differentiation from cryptocurrencies or blockchain algorithms. The main part of the thesis is to describe the possible application of blockchain in the financial sector, where particular use cases, operation of banking systems or protection of digital identity in banking systems and blockchain technology are described. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the use of blockchain technology in the financial sector using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research. Within the qualitative survey, the method of semi-structured interview is applied and the quantitative survey is carried out using a questionnaire survey. The result of the surveys was finding that blockchain is not used in large numbers in banking institutions operating in the Czech republic, so only one platform using blockchain elements was found.
