Issues of hospitalization of children accompanied by parents

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jaké jsou zkušenosti všeobecných sester a rodičů s dlouhodobou hospitalizací dítěte, které je při svém pobytu v nemocnici doprovázeno rodičem. Zkoumání bylo realizováno kvalitativní metodou. Sběr dat byl prováděn technikou nestandardizovaného rozhovoru a analýzou obsahu dokumentů. Účastníci rozhovorů byli vybráni metodou sněhové koule. Celkový soubor tvořilo šest respondentů, z toho tři všeobecné sestry a tři matky, doprovázející své hospitalizovné děti. Byly identifikovány tři základní kategorie zkoumaných zkušeností: péče, pomoc a podpora a režimová opatření. Pod pojmové kategorie byly tematicky zařazeny odpovídající podkategorie, které již konkrétně popisovaly výskyt zkušeností u jednotlivých respondentů. Průzkum ukázal, že spoluúčast při hospitalizaci vážně a dlouhodobě nemocného dítěte je pro rodiče zásadní, i když si své právo v podstatě neuvědomují a během příjmu jsou zcela podřízeni systému. Základní ošetřovatelskou péči vykonávají rodiče převážně spontánně, bez větších obtíží a negativního přístupu. Všeobecné sestry tuto spolupráci vítají a uvědomují si, že rodič k této činnosti potřebuje kvalitní a opakovanou edukaci. Personál poukázal i na negativní aspekty své práce, spojené například s nedostatečnou psychologickou podporou pro rodiče i personál, s prováděním léčebných a diagnostických výkonů v přítomnosti rodiče a s nedodržováním režimových opatření ze strany rodičů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to find out and make conclusions about the experience of nurses and parents who accompany their children during their long-term hospitalization in the hospital. The inquiry was conducted using the qualitative research method. Furthermore, data were collected via non-standardized interviews and content analysis of assembled documents. The interview participants were selected using the snowball sampling method. The total sample consisted of six respondents, including three nurses and three mothers who accompanied their hospitalized children. Three basic coding categories of investigated experiences were identified: care, help and support, and hospital?s care and treatment measures. As part of the research design, these conceptual coding categories were expanded by related thematic subcategories which more specifically described the occurrence of all individual respondents? experiences. The inquiry showed that parental presence and cooperation at the time of hospitalization of seriously and chronically ill children is crucial even though parents in essence do not realize this right and remain completely subjected to the system procedures while their child is being admitted to the hospital. Parents provide basic care predominantly in a spontaneous way, without much difficulty and negative attitude. Nurses welcome this cooperation, however they realize that in order to perform this function, parents need repeated quality instructions and education. The nursing staff also pointed out negative aspects of their own work which for instance related to insufficient psychological support for parents as well as hospital staff, performing treatment or diagnostic procedures in the presence of a parent or breaking the hospital?s care and treatment measures on the part of parents.
