Abstract:

Disertační práce se týká tématu mapy ve vizuálním umění. Práce je členěna podle tematických i historických souvislostí. V úvodu se zabývá obecně pojmem mapa, zkoumá jeho různé obsahy, proměnu jeho podob v různých souvislostech, kulturách a kontextech. Uvádí příklady způsobů jejich vznikání, užívání i možného zneužívání. Věnuje se komunikačnímu potenciálu map a také faktorům, které ovlivňují jejich interpretaci. Pro přiblížení východisek tvorby mapou a mapováním inspirovaných vizuálních umělců je stručně nastíněn historický vývoj mapového myšlení, vývoj vnímání prostoru a jeho vizualizace. Práce dále shrnuje hlavní prvky jazyka mapy a mapové symboliky. Na základě teoretických charakteristik umění a vědy jsou hledány obecné styčné body mezi těmito dvěma oblastmi lidské aktivity; zvláštní pozornost je věnována vzájemnému vztahu a interakci mezi uměním a kartografií. Samostatná kapitola podává přehled děl vizuálního umění a grafického designu spojených s konceptem mapy jak na zahraniční, tak především na současné české výtvarné scéně. Uvádí příklady využití potenciálu mapy jako výtvarného prostředku, ilustruje jimi možnosti, které koncept mapy nabízí, a identifikuje tematické kategorie. Vlastní výtvarný projekt, který z fenoménu mapy vychází, je dokumentován v závěrečné kapitole práce.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of map in the visual arts. The work is structured according to thematic and historical context. The introduction brings the notion of a map and studies its contents from various viewpoints, in various cultures and contexts. It presents examples of the ways how a map arises, how it is used, and how it is misused. Attention is paid to the communication potential of map and to the factors affecting its interpretation. In order to elucidate the motives of artists inspired by map and mapping, the history of map thinking is briefly presented along with the evolution of space perception and space visualization. The thesis summarizes the main elements of the map language and map symbolism. Starting from theoretical characteristics of arts and science the thesis seeks for general analogies between these two areas of human activities; particular attention is paid to links and interactions between fine arts and cartography. A dedicated chapter surveys the visual arts and graphics design connected with the concept of map both in the international and in particular in the Czech context. It presents examples of employing the map potential as a fine arts medium, illustrates the chances that the concept of map offers, and identifies some thematic categories. The closing chapter documents my own art project based on the phenomenon of the map.
